Radiator, thermostat and water pump?

The car I bought is through my brothers friend who today decided to take his radiator out of the car so this leaves me with having to get one which is ok but I'm having some debates with him on some things and would like some clarity.

1. The thermostat is lower hose not upper? He seems to think and say it is upper I've read and heard different.

2. While doing the thermostat it wouldn't be a bad idea to also replace the water pump?

I'm not exactly sure what all should be done for maintenance/replacing on this car considering I don't get it until Friday I'm just going off of the few things that my brother has told me and obviously a radiator (since he took it out) is top priority at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Radiator, thermostat and water pump?

I don't know that opening up the thermostat housing makes it any easier to get to the water pump -- they're not occupying common real estate. I do believe your right about the lower hose, though -- IIRC, flow through the radiator runs from bottom to top.

Lol it doesnt make it easier. Its just a good idea to replace it just cause..

Its like replacing the oil but not the filter... Just go ahead and do it. It dont hurt and it does help.

That's pretty much what I meant just didn't put it in those words. I have a list in my head constantly going on maintenance and replacing.

Its a good practice to think of things in advance....but they are not even remotely close to the same. The t-belt and water pump replacement is good to do together but that is more like saying I'm gonna replace my headlight bulb so I'll change my valve cover gasket. I'm not 100% positive but isn't the thermostat the top left of the head on the upper hose??/

Re: Radiator, thermostat and water pump?

The thermostat on my '95 H22A1 is in the housing connected at the top of the lower radiator hose near the bleeder valve. You can replace this easily, just get the new T-stat and gasket.

The water pump runs off your timing belt, which also runs technically every other pulley on the car. If neither you nor the seller know exactly when, if ever, the timing belt was last replaced, you'll want to do that. The whole timing belt job will runn $250-$400 if you do it yourself, depending on where you get parts.

Re: Radiator, thermostat and water pump?

I've looked it up a few times and the answer has been lower hose. Below the cai. Some people have agreed some have said I was wrong. And timing belt was another thing on my mental list along with what seems to be a lot of things.

Thanks Lindso...didn't see your post until after I posted mine...and I have no idea when the last time he did anything that's mainly why I'm starting a list. I personally don't know him so I don't fully trust his word for things.

Re: Radiator, thermostat and water pump?

What engine does your car have? I'm assuming it's a 1993...

Re: Radiator, thermostat and water pump?

Ok the thermostat is in the lower radiator hose outlet from the motor, change the water pump and all that cooling jive. And replace the T belt. Finally done, problem solved.
