Been ogling at the 4th gen for awhile...

I finally have enough saved up to buy one, but I want to make the right purchase.

I was wondering what sort of things should look for to make the best purchase. I talked to my mechanic friend Josh, and he says they're total crap. That they have alot of problems. I don't have very deep pockets, but I have flexible pockets. It would just take a month or two to save up to repair whatever goes wrong. (hopefully)

For this reason, I am cautious about buying. Soon I will be going to inspect/test drive a white lude. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the car, except it has high mileage, the color obviously, and that it seems to have been primarily driven in a rural area with alot of hills.

How high can i Expect any repair bills to be, and is their any preventative maintenance i can do to prevent future hiccups in operational status of my lude?

Any advice would be great. IM LOST!!!

Re: Been ogling at the 4th gen for awhile...

i have a 92 prelude and it has less problems then my 98 civic. the main thing i have seen **** up on the prelude is rust on the wheel wells, not a mechanical problem but pisses me off haha. a couple of my freinds ludes and mine have all needed to replace the speed sensor on the transmission. wasnt a expensive job but if you dont get it fixed the speedo either doesnt move or says your going from 0-240 in like half a second and jumps everywhere and it stops the mileage from moving so it says it has less miles then it actually has. that is the only problem i have had haha

I'm on my second 4th gen lude and love em and like 92prelude said the rear quarter panels suck on these cars. But my current car has 189xxx on it and all it needs is valve seals other than that I'd drive it to florida from Pa right now the way it sits. I hate when ppl dog on these cars, every car has it's flaws but these cars usually have dumb/easy problems to fix. And being a member of this site will def help along the way

Can the rust problem be fixed with some sand paper, disc grinder, and some primer/paint?

Re: Been ogling at the 4th gen for awhile...

Getting a Carfax is an important thing if you haven't been provided one already. If the car has been through 12 different owners, there's no telling how it's been treated. If you're only gonna be the 3rd or 4th owner, and the most recent one has had it awhile, you can gauge how it's been treated when you meet the seller. Most if not all problems stem from ignorance, all you gotta do is be lucky enough to buy a car (not just a Prelude) that's had a history of owners with common sense.

Are you the one that plans to perform maintenance to the car, or will you be having shops do it?

Post a link to the car on here if possible and some more info about it like mileage, transmission type, what part of the country it's in.. and we can give you our ideas about it. Climatic factors are what matter most with rust, so where you're located is important info.

Ultimately, if you find some other threads on here like this one, people are gonna say the same thing; It's a 15-20 year old car so the chances of finding that perfect one is not likely. It's a sports coupe so you'll want to assume it's been treated as so throughout it's lifetime.

It's gonna be up to you to determine what kinda of condition it's in, and it's up to you to perform the necessary checks. Timing belt jobs are the most important in my opinion, you can perform a compression test yourself, that's important. Another thing to look for is paint overspray in the wheel wells, pop the hood and look at where the fenders bolt on to see if there's a different color coming through, same thing with the inside of the doors. That could give you an idea if parts on it have been swapped for whatever reason.

Your mechanic friend Josh told you these cars are total crap. If he's truly a legitimate mechanic, then chances are he only sees the cars that have problems, and doesn't see the ones that don't. A logical person with half a brain that performs regular upkeep and maintenance on a Ford Pinto could keep it going for 500K miles without a problem, and Preludes are no different. They're easy to maintain, cheap on the upkeep and in most cases relatively cheap to upgrade if you're into that, and they're built like brick ****houses.

I was in the same position as you a little over a year ago when I bought mine. Never owned anything but an SUV and wanted something spunky and fun, and while looking for Infinity G35's and BMW 330i's, I found this Prelude, I've worked on it and brought it to life, and I'm really happy about it. It's had it's share of problems, all minor, but annoying. Nonetheless, I've driven about 10K on it since I purchased it, and have come across no major mechanical faults yet.

Re: Been ogling at the 4th gen for awhile...

mines at 260xxx and its runs amazing, if the person before you took decent care of it and didnt run it to the ground you shouldnt have any major problems at all. manginoslude is right, the stuff that does break is just easy stupid stuff you can do by yourself. ummm and the rust on my quarter panals wasnt to bad before december until it got impounded in whistler and sat in salt for a week. and ya if u did the work you could get rid of it pretty easily. and i would drive mine to florida to... but im up in BC canada haha

Like everyone else said get a carfax, test drive it and bring your mechanic friend along. I love my lude and wouldn't trade it for anything else. The look and design of the 4th gen is timeless and continues to look good even now :-) Good luck shopping.

What does everybody think about these ads?

All of them have some issues to be addressed, but I could probably talk them down, and get it fixed for cheap. Anybody know about how much they would cost, and what could possibly be the cheapest to fix up?

Re: Been ogling at the 4th gen for awhile...

The first two are automatic tranny's, so unless you're buying this car to drive to the store and back, and unless you're planning on putting a 5spd in later, those probably aren't the cars you wanna get. That blue one is pretty but I spy rust. The second specifies rust as well. Plus, neither specify what engine they have.

The third one, dunno what transmission it has, but it has the H23. Non-VTEC but easily converted to boost. Has suspension problems though, so the extent of it is questionable.

Would you rather have an auto or manual? And would you rather have VTEC or no?

Re: Been ogling at the 4th gen for awhile...

I'd rather have an Automatic first for awhile. I'm not a new driver, but I have limited experience on the road. Engine doesn't matter to me, but if it craps out, I'd consider a swap.

I like the first one, but no muffler? Ehhhh.

The second one shakes "a little" at 65 MPH. :| No idea what could be wrong with that one.

And the third one is even more unappealing.

The second one looks good but I personally hate autos.......but if you don't mind the auto the second one looks best, definitely have that shaking at 65mph looked at,might be some bad ball joints or wheel bearing good luck!
