Icon5 Just a few questions about my prospective buy

Hi all,

I'm new here, and new to the prelude scene I guess, and I was looking to buy this '96 lude from a dealership in Orlando, as it's about in my price-range and looks like a steal. First off, the ad says it has an h23 engine swap, but it appears to me it might be an F22B...? So I'd like a little bit of clarification on that from someone more experienced (I already emailed the dealer). Also, if there is anything that looks outright wrong with it, I'd appreciate if someone could point it out, as I said I'm no expert. It only has 123,000 miles, and looks pretty decent to me, I'd just like some educated opinions before I go drive to Orlando this weekend. A link to the ad with plenty of pics is at the bottom.

Cheers,
-Mike

Re: Just a few questions about my prospective buy

Yeah, I'm assuming that along with the air filter are lying around somewhere on their dealership. If not, I'd have to buy a new one, which isn't a huge deal.

i would without a doubt stay away from that. engine does appear to be an h23. theres no intake. SH was only 97-01.

Re: Just a few questions about my prospective buy

Basically what UPS said. It's an H23 for sure, but there is not even a FILTER on the TB, let alone an intake pipe, and also like UPS said, 4G Preludes never came in an SH trim, only S, Si, and SiVTEC in the states.

General rule of thumb: Any time a car has a shocker sticker on it, stay away, it was abused by a teenage boy. lol

Re: Just a few questions about my prospective buy

Well, there is a list of reasons NOT to buy it....

1. A car dealer should know the trim levels of cars. Not knowing is unacceptable. That is their job.

2. Buy here, pay here places are notorious for half rate junk cars

3. Even though you can put a filter on it, how long has it been running with out. Can you say scored cylinder walls??

4. It is at least 2 different colors. How many times has it been wrecked?

Unless you wanna roll the dice on a $1000...$2000 purchase I would punt.

Re: Just a few questions about my prospective buy

^^ what these guys said. Plus the autozone shift knob and oversized wheels. For that price you can find a muuuuch better prelude with a small bit of patience that much I can promise you. I joined this forum, and educated myself for 3 months before I found my lude, and I dont regret a single bit of it because it paid off. Not saying you need to educate yourself or even wait as long as I did, just have a little patience you will no doubt find one worth your time and money.

Re: Just a few questions about my prospective buy

Alright everyone, thanks for the tips. There's a white '96 I was also looking at that's totally stock and driven by some 30 year old chick for $2500 as well, so that one might be a better investment anyways.

That definitely sounds like a much better investment.

Make sure it's a manual! Unless you want to do a 5spd swap shortly down the road. Prelude auto transmissions are ridiculously notorious for failure.

be careful anytime you are looking to buy a car from a dealer man, especially something like a buy here pay here place...make sure you get a VIN and look up some history on anything before you buy it, dealer or private seller

Re: Just a few questions about my prospective buy

ya i agree with everyone here as well- i know thats a h23 (i have one) great engine but id say pass on this one,
and with the "mods" it has i would say a kid drove the crap outta it. one of his friends prolly told him to take off the intake and filter so it would "go faster". i would only recommend buying it if you are ready to spend more money on it.

Re: Just a few questions about my prospective buy

Both cars are five speeds, and both are 2500, it's just that the white one from the private seller has the base f22...I guess I could get it and do a swap later, since it seems that car is the safer option.

you're on the right track thinking about the stock one...i mean wouldn't you rather spend 2500 on a decent looking nice running car than on a riced out POS that is on life support waiting for the plug to be pulled?

F22 is the best for boost

f22's are actually really good, no need to swap. invest a little money and you can get it NA or boosted. look at bishimotos f22a1 =) 415hp NA

Yeah, also look at how much time and money Bisi has sunk into his F22, not to mention he has an amount of expertise beyond pretty much ANYONE when it comes to single cam Honda motors.

I went and looked at that very car.....don't waste your time. and if the other one is on craigslist and the white 5spd with like 180000 miles with recent maintenance that is crap too. you gotta be real careful on c-list man. there is alot of junk on there. ive looked at almost all 4th gens on there in person and drove them. there are a few good ones but your gonna have to pay

yeah but my point was that f22 still has potential, i know bisi is ridiculous with single cams haha and how much he has put into it but when every one is like ughhh and f22 there is actually a long way an f22 can go, i was building an f22 but a publix salary with a 17 year old doesnt work out to well for that XD if you have around 950$ you can drop into the engine it will be really nice, but thats also with most engines

That's a bit cynical...I really don't have ten grand to blow on a car, and if I can get a 15 year old car that I like for a Price I can afford, I won't be complaining. Might I ask what in particular was wrong with the white one? Were you talking about the one in Deltona?
