Icon5 gauge issue

my car is a giant mess of bad wiring from the last owner splicing anything that looked shiny my ignition switch caught fire 2 months ago it was spliced 3x with no apparent reason except to tie it back together... any way since then my gas/temp gauge started to flicker and now doesn't work at all..

before i go and rip apart the whole dash, is there anything i should avoid aside from the air bag wires that might cause damage?

Can I quote this and display it in my sig bar for all the "Know-it-all's" that say it is OK to splice into and use the ignition wire?

As far as what to avoid, you are correct in avoiding the safety restraint system. The good news all of those wires are loomed with yellow split loom and connectors are also a bright yellow with "safety" disconnects. Even unplugging your battery is not a guarantee that this system will not explode an air bag. (most use a capacitor as a backup power source to ensure they will go off even in the event the battery is disconnected)

You may also want to have a permanent ink marker to mark each harness as you pull it apart. You have a healthy job ahead of you. Just remember, a GOOD mechanical connection ensures a GOOD electrical connection.
