notchy prelude bb1 gearbox

guys ive just brought a 96 prelude 2.2 vtec

the gearbox is alright most of the times but some times getting it into 1st gear is impossible.

At times trying to get it into 1st produces a crunching noise.
The clutch then goes hard.

After a few minutes it seems to be ok...

any idea what it could be?

thanks

I'm no tranny expert but first thing I would do is check your shifter cables, make sure there's nothing obstructing them in the bay. Also, maybe just to be safe, drain the trans fluid and refill it with Honda MTF and a bit of Syncromesh.

By the sounds of it nothing is wrong. Honda added a safety feature that does not let the driver put the car into first gear when the car is moving. Its there to make sure you dont make an ultimate error and downshift into first instead of third and turn your prelude into a grenade.
