Heated seat repair?

Hey everyone, I recently purchased a 95' Prelude SRV, it needs a little work but other then that its a great car, I'm doing the front drivers side wheel bearing tomorrow because the previous owner only replace the other three and im also doing the rear brake pads tomorrow. As for the interior the passenger seat has a rip in the leather so im going to see if that can be repaired or i'll just buy seat covers for now. Now the big problem is the drivers side heated seat, the previous owner told me the coil started burning a hole in the leather so he just disconnected it and left it. is there a way to replace or repair the coil? i would really enjoy having a toasty bum in the winter! Thanks for any help!

Re: Heated seat repair?

You could throw in a circuit breaker in the line, I guess :)

From what I know about heaters, the coils are touching and there is a sort of a short, not a full blown short but low resistance short that pulls lots of current but not enough to blow the fuse.

I would check the amp usage on your left and right and see if it's eating lot more or is above spec. If it is, then you have to open it up.

Maybe adding resistors would work but then maybe it would only warm up your left bun.

Re: Heated seat repair?

I'm sure you can replace the coil... Or buy an aftermarket heating coil and put it in there..

I would just switch it with the passenger one and make the passengers suffer without heat..

Wish I could help you out more... I have heated seats too

Re: Heated seat repair?

d/l the user guide in the stickies... I just searched "Seat Heater" in the PDF and got 20 hits.

why do so many people refuse to use the troubleshooting steps that are layed out in black and white, literally, for them?

Re: Heated seat repair?

Unfortunately, I have not yet experienced the wonder of heated seats in my prelude base 2003. The switches light up, the fuse is intact, and the relay clicks, so I am 90% sure that I have breaks in my heater pads. My plan of attached will consist of removing the seats, removing the upholstery, and checking the wires for breaks, which I will repair with my trusty soldering iron. I was wondering whether anyone here had attempted this, and if so, would like to relate their experience, e.g. how long did it take, did it stay fixed, were you able to identify the breaks visually or do you need a voltometre...? Also, is there a pad for the lower back as well, or just the seat? Is it necessary to remove the seat, or can this be easily done in the car?

Regards,

Brandon
