Me myself, and my lude.

First off I am a noob.I was a tweeker for 11 years and now hold 3 years clean.
I'm going through the process of repairing my prelude currently, and I thought I'd share my experience with you guys.
I own a 1992 prelude si, h23 AUTOMATIC. I dislike the auto very much, but I bought the car from my sister when I had no other options, she helped me out by letting me make payments and I fell in love the car.
So I owned the car for 9 months and the head cracked, this was in September of 2010. I freaked out not knowing what to do and further more do to my lack of experience the car sat there until December.
I did some basic research during this time and finally decided to do the repairs myself with my dads help.
Keep in mind just a month ago I didn't even know what a fuel filter looked like, I've already learned so much and am just full of questions, so thanx to everyone who has the patience to converse with me and answer question that you have already answered a million times.

okay so here is my lude now in my garage with no bumber or fender

Attachment 7026

here is my old head with the crack marked
Attachment 7027

two pics of both heads {cracked and the rebuilt one} next to each other
Attachment 7028
Attachment 7029

bottom of rebuilt head
Attachment 7030

both sets of cams, only one set of cam gears though. I do have an extra set of valves rocker arms and cams now if it would help anyone.
Attachment 7031

Like I said in the beginning I didn't even know what a fuel filter looked like lol here it is, bought a new one from honda it was so easy to put on.
Attachment 7032

I bought my water pump from hust brothers for 40$ then when I took out the old one I didn't like the quality of the one I bought, so I returned it and bought one from honda for 100$, bad pic but ....
Attachment 7033

Next is a few pics of the engine with no head, should I attempt to clean the pistons? I don't want all that grime to fall into the cylinder walls.

Re: Me myself, and my lude.

Congrats on your car. Looks like it is coming along. I would probably clean the piston off if it is thick buildup. Not sure if I would use liquid cleaner or elbow grease. Hopefully, someone with more import experience than I will chime in.

Re: Me myself, and my lude.

so I spent most of today detailing the engine bay , and then reinstalling the headlights and front bumper.

couple pics of the engine bay after i cleaned it
engine bay clean1.jpg
engine bay clean2.jpg

Here are my headlights i got off ebay, not a bad purchase except i like the one piece a lot better now that I don't have it lol, and in the winter they fog up. They are projectors with halo and the ebay hid's which suck by the way
headlight1.jpg
headlight2.jpg

I have no idea why but this was probably the dirtiest part on my car so far, besides the block, THE HOOD LATCH. This thing was horrid

dirty hood latch front and rear
hood latch dirty.jpg
hood latch dirty 2.jpg

So I cleaned it with brake cleaner, degreaser and time

Re: Me myself, and my lude.

you will want to look at the lobes(shiny bumpy parts) and look for heavy scratches.
also look on the shaft for any stress fractures or cracks. all and all look at which one basically looks "newer" and less worn. attention to detail is every thing with internal parts.
Also i would not worry about your pistons. However if you are a neat freak (like most of us with our cars) wait about 1000 miles AFTER you install your new head and run some seafoam in a vacuum line that goes into the Intake manifold to clean out the combustion chamber and get a lil of that carbon off of the top of the piston. Its really not needed but like i said its up to you. On a side note congrats for being clean, my dad went through that **** when i was a kid and in a nut shell it ruins other peoples lifes not just your own. You got my respect for being clean and taking up a hobby such as the prelude.

Man am I a noob, I put my head on and then had to take it off to have it heli coiled, then I got my timing all together and the next morning went to put the timing covers on only to realize one of the covers goes behind the belts! O well no shame in my game, so here a pic without the head again.
