Thinking of getting a 4th Gen....Questions

Hey guys!

I'm new here and thought this would be a good place to get some info. I am a college student and I currently own a 99 Pontiac Grand Prix GT coupe that I'm selling in the summer. I want a Prelude. I specifically want a 96 4th gen or possibly the 5th gen. Now my GP has good space and I'm 6'2, about 180 pounds. Will I fit in one comfortably? I'm not worried about backseat space. Just front seat space. Also, I plan on keeping the car til it dies so is there anything I need to know about this gen? Do you guys even think this is a smart move, me buying a car that's 16 years old or so and then trying to keep it for a long time? So any advice or knowledge about the Lude is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm 6'2" also, I'm a lot bigger around than you, and I fit comfortably. Good luck.

Thanks. Well that solves the height issue. Any other issues with the car?

Re: Thinking of getting a 4th Gen....Questions

Check for a rusty sunroof and rear arches. Typical areas where the rot sets in. Most 4th gen models circa 15 years plus have this issue. The sunroof can be replaced with a 5th gen 'moonroof' with some simple modifications. Re the rust, the earlier it is corrected the better.

Re: Thinking of getting a 4th Gen....Questions

besides the rust and the sun roof you HAVE to remember that it IS a 15 yr old car so there may be small or large mechanical issues, check the engine and suspension try to get some matince(spelling im still half asleep) records, and get a feel of the person you are buying it from are they shady? do they tell you how damn fast it is? do they tell you it "still chirps 2ed" if they are like that it was most likely beat on. if you want a project car or something great on fuel but eahh to drive get the F22 or the prelude S model
if you want ear to ear grinning low end TQ and fun car to drive that is still decent on gas get the H23A1 or prelude Si and if you want the top of the line fastest prelude get the H22A1 or prelude SI VTEC. The 4th gens don't have "bad" automatic trannys (the fail alot less than the 5th gens) hell mine held up to a constant beat down until i swapped the 5spd in on my 1st prelude(still you want the 5spd its wayyyy better). they are great cars but like any used car just be careful of what you buy

Re: Thinking of getting a 4th Gen....Questions

OK. Thanks. That is good to know. So look out for rust around the sunroof and rear arches. It would probably be an S or Si model if I could get one, cause the VTEC is very rare. And the transmissions go out a lot on the 5th gen? I think I did read that but I was hoping it wasn't true......guess it is.

the AUTO trans fails on the 5g. The manual 5speed is just fine.

good luck with your lude search

Re: Thinking of getting a 4th Gen....Questions

welcome holmes, your making a good choice here.

the vtec isnt that rare haha, probably easier to find then the S model.

rarity is in the 4ws but thats where the fun is.

if you do want vtec then your garenteed to get it in a 5th gen

Re: Thinking of getting a 4th Gen....Questions

So the 5 speed is good everyone is saying? But the problem with that is family reason why I can't get one. I'd rather not discuss that haha but the VTEC isn't that rare? Hmmm.....OK. So besides transmission and rust, are there any other problems? Thanks guys. I like this place! Is the 4th gen auto bad?

falsee... maybe a 4th gen with an h22 in it is more common than an origonal S but as far as the origonal VTEC...? its not necessarily the most common prelude cruizing around. how ever the SI is by far the most common and the S is a more common find than the vtec as well. and the 4ws... lets not go there lol im waiting for one to pop up now for a DD :/

Re: Thinking of getting a 4th Gen....Questions

Hello guys, I recently crashed my car and i am in the market for a new one. While i"m waiting for my insurance to go through. I am recently borrowing a very clean 94 Prelude si (I THINK I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT LUDE's) it has an H23a1. it has 166500 miles on it. Also the prelude has a funky starter but it works 90 percent of the time just not this morning when it was cold :<! also is it just me or is 3'd a beast?? i luv the torque and its kind of growing on me. was wondering if i should keep that or a bar'd legal 91 crx with a b16a swap also power everything. HP isn't everything i want good gas mileage too. bottom line is i was just wondering if i could get some advice as in whether to keep the 94 prelude H23a1 or the crx or something with a lighter chassis plz let me kno your opinion ty.

I love my 4g 'lude. I also have a CRX. The CRX is more like a go-kart, and I couldn't see using it as a daily driver lol.

Re: Thinking of getting a 4th Gen....Questions

Bottom line, manual trans is where it's at. The automatic will be fine if you're just a cruiser and don't beat on it, because the auto's don't handle stress well. There's sporadic 5th gear grind issues you'll find listed around but again, that's usually only gonna happen if you drive it hard, and that's more of a Honda problem than a Prelude problem.

Now you're looking for a 15-16 year old car. A 4-banger Honda that old in 'like new' condition will be more rare of a find than a specific model, so I'm wondering what your overall plans are. You said you're keeping it til it dies..are you planning on investing more than just what it takes to keep it running? Is this strictly gonna be a 'normal' car for you or are you gonna be like 99% of us, find out how much damn fun the car is, and start working overtime at work for extra cash to spend on performance and cosmetics?

the 94 si4ws prelude in 5 speed was probably the most common prelude out there way more common than the typical si and s maybe you should search for this one! you shouldnt have no problem what so ever!:p ahh and that stupid common in dash cell phone ;)

It would really just be my "normal" car, something sporty to cruise around in and look good and have some fun occasionally. Now mods and cosmetics? Maybe over time. I thought about it and really think I'd have the car about 4 to 5 years.......my college car. Or keep it longer depending on my financial situation after school and whatnot. Cheap, reliable, sporty and good on gas. It's gotta be a auto for family reasons. I think I explained it in this thread or the other in the 5th gen section.

Re: Thinking of getting a 4th Gen....Questions

Ah okay well in that case you've probably got all the info you need on the transmission so we won't beat a dead horse. So instead I'll leave you with this.

When I was shopping for another vehicle, I was shopping for either a BMW 330i, a 2004 or earlier M3, or a 2006 or prior Infiniti G35. I also have a Nissan Xterra, but I wanted something sporty for the road, something quick and eye catching that I could be proud of having. I'm not one of those dooshes that flaunts success by the car he drives (obviously since I'm part of a Prelude forum now haha!), I just like having something I can stare at when I'm bored.
Test drove several G35's, still love them dearly.
Test drove several 330i's, even one with the M package.
Never found an M3 I liked, all the ones I came across had high miles or godawful paint. Like that puke yellow or funky light blue with the light gray interior.

I bought a 4th gen Prelude for less than $1500, beat to hell and ass-ugly at the time. Click the 'Oy the Pain' link in my signature to see.

And here I am, driving the Prelude around instead of one of three of the top 5 consumers most wanted vehicles for the last decade. And I'm happy about it.

EDIT: Some replacement parts are hard to come by. Like a damn cup holder. All I need is the cover for it, and I'm relying on somebody on here to sell one or to come across one in a junkyard, cuz I'm damn well not paying $50 for a whole new cup holder. Little things like that I'd say are the negative things.

Re: Thinking of getting a 4th Gen....Questions

hey man i got a 4th gen and i love it! i am the second owner of a 92 lude S with the basic F22A1.. but gas is good and its still peppy. i just hit around 189K on it and i have only invested in small things like brakes or new clutch fluid, tie rod and such. I bought it for $1500 from a guy in his 50's! He seemed sad to let it go but i was like Hell Yes! haha Like they said though the rust does get to you especially out in here in Germany its nuts! but for a DD its a pretty nice car i love cruising around in it. I could be going to work or just driving around and it makes you wanna drive it more!! The wifey always seem to tell me when are you going to drive our new 2010 VW jetta and im like never! haha anyhow good luck man and have fun with it! :)
