I paid $35 for the tool at napa after macgeyvering 3 crank pulley bolts off for Tbelt changes recently and i have at least one other to do soon. At the rate ive changed honda timing belts, its quite likely Ill be doing many more and $35 isnt a big investment for a tool that helps pwn arguably the most PITA bolt on the car.

Besides the 28mm drain plug bolt that needs to come out before you can install a block heater... NOT looking forward to that, haha.

Just buy the tool, it's worth it.

Impact gun. If you can't get ahold of one, heat it up.

Re: crankshaft pulley !!!!

What is "the tool" everyone is referring to?

I thought an impact would get it off or a breaker bar and a screwdriver.

Hold on a tic, have you already removed the crank pulley bolt, but cannot remove the pulley itself from the engine?

Re: crankshaft pulley !!!!

i have an 88 honda prelude 2.0 si, with 4ws....the vin says it is an import from japan.. the crankshaft pulley has no hexagon indent for any tool nor does it have any holes in the pulley itself... the problem is removing the crankshaft pulley bolt, there is no way to hold the pulley from turning and is it a right hand thread bolt??? very aggravating indeed any suggestions would be helpful...

Re: crankshaft pulley !!!!

Haha I remember this. We tried for 6 hours to get it off.

In the end it took a massive 1 inch air impact gun, and the shop compressor had to build up for a couple minuets. Tipped the guy a 20 for the help.

Re: crankshaft pulley !!!!

Well that sounds about right...lol..... it would figure that i have the car at home and ripped apart and no air compressor available..i read online to use the starter to break the bolt free however, the motor rotation which is counterclockwise makes me think the bolt maybe left hand thread....thanks for the input

Re: crankshaft pulley !!!!

Mine is a third generation prelude. I borrowed an impact gun so hopefully it will take the bolt out.

Re: crankshaft pulley !!!!

SUCCESS, finally got the bolt off....after trying the impact, soaking the bolt with WD-40 (not really a penetrating oil but it helped) also hit the bolt with a hammer to shock it then one squeeze of the impact gun and it came right out. Thanks for the advice all....

Re: crankshaft pulley !!!!

By the way...

Using an impact gun on a crankshaft bolt is a big no-no.

Just sayin'....
