93 Prelude Valve Cover bolts wont tighten

I have this issue guys in which my valve cover on my 93 Lude SI 4WS wont tighten all the way. Is it possible to over tighten the valve cover bolts and strip them?
If so, CRAP.. what do you suggest for a fix?

Thanks for any suggestions. I am slowly fixing up the Lude and I hope to post some pics up soon.

Yes, you stripped the bolt. That happened to me. I ordered new bolts and nut caps from HondaPartsnow.com You can order new bolts here:

Part Detail

You might as well replace the other valve cover bolts and get new nut caps too. When I stripped the bolt on my prelude I ordered 1 new bolt. After I replaced the stripped bolt I stripped a second bolt. At that point I just ordered 3 new bolts and nut caps.

If you cant get the acorn nuts off try squeezing them while turning. That worked for me. You will probably have to replace the studs too. Remember that they only call for 9lbs of torque.

Re: 93 Prelude Valve Cover bolts wont tighten

Your welcome. After you install your new bolts you might want to check your spark plugs for oil before you put the valve cover back on. Mine had oil on them.

that could mean a few things. hopefully its because your bolts cant tighten down and its just leaking in. if not, youre in a world of hurt

Is the oil on the external side of the plug? If so it is probably the fact that your nuts/studs are stripped. When you replace the studs/nuts get a new valve cover gasket that comes with the spark plug seals.

Re: 93 Prelude Valve Cover bolts wont tighten

I didn't replace the valve gasket when I changed my valve cover, as the old one looked fine. Do you really suggest replacing the rubber gasket? I am sure it's a good idea, but funds are low and I figured if it's not broke don;t fix it. I appreciate your input.
mikeypx82 - nice looking Lude BTW. It looks pretty sharp. The color is close to mine as well. i really need to get some pics of mine.

Re: 93 Prelude Valve Cover bolts wont tighten

You can probably get away with not replacing the valve cover gasket but you should replace the spark plug rubber seals seeing as they were leaking. Oreillys and I don't know who else sells just the spark plug seals for about 3 bucks each.

Re: 93 Prelude Valve Cover bolts wont tighten

OH crap.. you just made we think of a huge problem I did.. crap. I never put the spark plug rubber seals back in when I got my new powder coated valve cover in! %#@!

I have been driving a few days without the plug seals in, so I am sure some oil got down in the plugs. Other then being an idiot, which is easy to see.. how screwed do you think I am??

Do you think if I simply put the spark plug seals back in (like they should be) any oil down in there will simply burn off?

I just put in 4 new BOSCH two prong Platinum plugs, as well as put on a new MSD distributor cap, blaster coil, & MSD ignition modual to send fire down the new 8mm plug wires I installed.

Not that screwed.lol. If it got really bad your idle would have become erratic/the engine will sound like its running on 2 cylinders due to spark being lost.

No, the oil in there will not burn off. You need to remove the spark plugs and at the very least clean where there is oil, clean the ignition leads (inside the plug & outside) and the spark plugs.

Not sure how great the BOSCH two prong platinum plugs are in Honda engines, I have mainly read negative feedback about them but have never tried them (for that reason). Can recommend NGK Iridiums though!

Re: 93 Prelude Valve Cover bolts wont tighten

R u using a torch wrench and tightening them to spec? Cause if not something will go wrong? And as for the bolts just get them at Honda dealership they rnt that expensive.
