Re: squealing noise?

Serpentine belts (belts that is attached to the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley that power the alternator and AC).

It's in the manual on how to tighten the belts and how much to.

My buddy over-torqued a bolt and it's spinning so it squeals like yours because I can't get it tight enough :(

Don't over-tighten because it apparently lowers the lifetime of the alternator.

Re: squealing noise?

when you take off your belts turn it around to the teeth side and check for cracks if it is time for new one

Re: squealing noise?

Its definitely the serpentine belt...

I wonder if Goodyear makes a gatorback belt for the serp? I just ordered one for the sc pulley because all the other brands suck balls! They always get loose over time and you have to tighten them again..plus gatorbacks are supposed to be quieter too..

He just said he didn't have one...

Anyway, check deflection. Belt deflection is how much the belt moves down when you push on it with your thumb.

So many people ask this, I looked it up.

Prelude: 0.33-0.43" (8.5-11mm) for new belts, 0.51-0.65" (13-16.5mm) for used belts.

(Deflection measurement is inches (mm) with 22lbs. (10kg) pressure applied midway on longest belt run.)

Basically, on the belt that you want to check, find the longest free span of belt between pulleys. Go to the middle of that section of belt, and push down with your thumb while holding a ruler behind it. How much did the belt move? Half an inch? Perfect. If it moved too much more than that, or not enough (say about a quarter to eigth inch tolerance) then you need to readjust.

If you have it adjusted properly and it is still making noise, then chances are the belt is worn, glazed, or otherwise damaged and needs to be replaced.
