Thinking of buying a 4th gen

Hey guys (from New Zealand)! =)

Well, I've been lusting over getting a car for a while (since I turned 15, where I was old enough to drive cars, I'm 17 now), and I've decided high time I get one... I want a fourth generation Prelude for three reasons; 1. I absolutely love the look of them, 2. the interiors are wonderful, pretty nicely equipped and I love the dashboard and 3. Decent ones are cheap here since most are grey imports from Japan (most are between NZ$1000-$3000) and relatively cheap to insure since its only an NA 4-cylinder FWD.

Anyway, of course I've read the spec sheets and everything, so I know about that. I was just wondering what tends to go wrong on these old cars as the kilometers pass and go? I'm fairly good at DIY and I really love to fix technical/electronic things, and I know a few things about fixing cars so I'd like to be aware of them.

I was also thinking the dashboard is the PERFECT place to put a 7" LCD TV (which I can get for cheap) a la this video: - would anyone have any idea where I could find a tutorial for that, because I've been searching and haven't come up with anything.

Thanks guys.

Re: Thinking of buying a 4th gen

Buy one! Best decision that I've made in a while. Mine is all stock 145,000 miles. The only thing thats gone bad is the fuel pump and the stock radio.
Get the VTEC, I can't immagine the car without it. Enjoy.

Re: Thinking of buying a 4th gen

That's pretty good with things that break.. I'm very aware of the reliability of Hondas though so I can't be truly surprised at that though. ^_~

I'm aiming for a VTEC model (one with the H22* engine most likely since they are the most common engine put in Preludes here) with a manual transmission and hopefully digital climate control already installed (since I want that and will convert the car I buy if it doesn't). Also want one with the electroluminescent speedo/tachometer, but since thats an easy replacement, I'm not fussed over it.

Re: Thinking of buying a 4th gen

I think that its the 94-96 that has the electrosomething gauges.
My 96 doesn't have digital climate control, but I can't imagine its too hard to change.

To the OP. For the digital CC It's not too too hard but there are some minor modifications that u have to do to get it to work.

The 4G is literally the best car I have owned. I absolutely love this thing. Just make sure you DO NOT get an automatic. You will completely regret it.

Re: Thinking of buying a 4th gen

Get the 4g. You will be put to the test on patience, tolerance and acceptance. No joke, if u buy one be prepared for alot of emotional times.

I love my lude and I've learned so many automotive techniques and secrets from messing w mine. If you can handle having a BI POLAR car, go for it. In a prelude life, nothing is given, no company will back us up and everything you wanna do to your car will have to be pioneered by YOU.

My case is quite the opposite. I love my 4th gen. It's a rusty pile of crap with the heart of a champion. Sure, the hood doesn't match, the door and fender are crushed, it's got more cancer than St Jude's, 185k miles.... and yet it's been the best vehicle I've owned. It doesn't b!tch and complain. It doesn't pop up with random mechanical issues. It may take a few extra revolutions to start, but she never fails to get going.

Oh, and black leather is gangster.
