Need transmission advice

I just got a '93 Si, has the H22 engine with the M2S4 (I think) transmission. But the transmission is bad.

I would like to know if I can put the transmission off of an f22a1 into my car and have it work. I can get a good deal on that tranny.

I appreciate any help. I do not know much about mechanics, and this is my first Honda. I have been driving Toyotas for years, as have most of my family.

But I love this Prelude. It is custom enough to move like a real sports car and it is really fun when it is working.

Re: Need transmission advice

Or would a tranny out of a '97 Accord fit and work?

Pretty sure any H or F series transmission will work fine.

You sir are correct!

Longer gears in the F series tranny good for turbo

I thought the H23 had the longest gear ratios?

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Final

92-96 Prelude S (F22A1) 3.310 1.810 1.232 0.900 0.710 4.062

92-96 Prelude Si (H23A1) 3.307 1.857 1.320 1.034 0.812 4.266

Sorry about it being bunched together, I couldn't get it to paste right.

Has anyone does this swap? I want to be absolutely sure it will work before I spend $200 on a part.

Damn it I can't find the exact numbers on the F23A1 tranny but it has gears for sure. I'll keep looking..

Yeah but it isn't showing a USDM 98-02 Accord F23A1 tranny. It shows a Euro and Accord type R which are both the same in final drive. I want to say that the final drive on the F23A1 USDM is 4.6 or 4.7, like I said I'll keep looking.

What kind of effect on acceleration would putting a longer geared tranny in have? Worse?

Idk but probably worse unless you have a reckless amount of boost

I'd venture to say worse as well. Considering Honda's really only have power at high RPM's, and a longer gear means it takes more time to get to that power, there will probably be a slight decrease in acceleration.

Yes, it should bolt straight up, but don't quote me on that.

Good idea.

Good thing you excluded the Supra or I would have had to kill you

Pretty sure any H or F series anything will bolt almost straight up in any Prelude. Not positive, but pretty sure, lol. The Supra has been my dream car ever since I can remember. ae86 is hideous and the mr2 is too small. I'd still drive it though

I have the F-series tranny. It's a love/hate situation. I love the gas mileage on the freeway. I hate that I can't keep it in vtec when I switch gears.

Re: Need transmission advice

I got the transmission from the '96 Accord put in. Got it back this morning and it works great. This transmission is a little more sedate and does not have quite the punch, but that is fine with me.

Although now I am actually wanting to sell my Prelude and get one without a bunch of custom stuff. I would prefer one closer to stock, though not necessarily completely stock.

If you were wanting to build NA couldn't you just buy some cams and tune. So the vtec stays engaged with the longer gears???

Thanks

Im planning on doing the same tranny swap*

Do you think that cams and a tune would make that much of a difference on my engine's redline? As soon as I get the chance/money I am pulling the F tranny out and putting the H22 tranny in.

Yeah here's a lil rule of thumb when it comes to gear ratios the bigger number ratio=faster acceleration(aka short ratio) smaller number ratio=higher top speed (tall ratio)
