Checked out the engine light and...

Ok so most of the time when I am driving my engine light will come on eventually, but not every single time so I decided to check out what the code was and i got one long flash and two short flashes. I am assuming that means code 12 which is 12 EGR - exhaust gas recirculation lift valve.

I have a 1993 prelude sr-v it has the jdm h22a in it. so what exactly do I need to fix if I am getting this code. If this helps my car has been running rich lately as well so I am getting a decent amount of carbon on the bumper whenever v tec kicks in and pushing the gas more to accelerate more.(when I give it to the car lol) so any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Probably means "replace EGR valve"!

I haven't done this procedure but you can check 11-153 for the full flowchart of the diagnosis of this MIL.

Re: Checked out the engine light and...

try taking the valve off and cleaning it with carb cleaner before you replace it

Re: Checked out the engine light and...

where i live we have emissions testing every odd year for my car. once it hits a certain age limit though then it doesn't need to get tested anymore. I think that happens once the car is 20 years old. Why would i want to delete it. what benefit is it to me in the end?

Re: Checked out the engine light and...

well it recycles hot exhaust gases back into your engine for emmissions purposes and is kinda bad for the engine. if you delete it your fuel economy will increase

Exhaust gas lowers the temperature in the engine and lowers knocking. Slower burn rate.

Since engines are designed with EGR, deletion would cause knocking and lower fuel economy I would assume.

Re: Checked out the engine light and...

Honestly man, don't do it half-azz. Find out what the problem is and fix it right before it leads to other shiz. If you can afford to fix it that is what you should do. Deleting it doesn't make the problem go away...just saying...

I can agree with your statement. But we have the people saying to delete it and I will get better fuel mileage and then you have the people saying just clean it and you will have better fuel mileage. My fuel mileage is **** and I would like to get this fixed so which option is the correct option?

Also I read on a Canadian prelude forum that cleaning the egr on a 4g is more difficult because I have to take the whole manifold off and drill from the bottom where as the 5g with the h22a4 u can do it without taking the manifold off.

Since mine is a JDM h22a so technically speaking itís not the original 4g engine so I am at a loss of what to do and who is right and all that jazz. The only thing I do know at the moment is I need to start with cleaning the valve after that..... Itís all?????? from here
