new suspension

So mY suspension is shot and stock. I have some 17x7 wheels with 205/40zr17 84w toyos, I need a new suspension but don't know what I should buy. I would like the idea of my car sitting a little lower but should I do coilovers or springs? What are the benefits of coilovers vs springs? Also I don't want to dump tons of money in this car but I could spend a bit. And I would be doing the work myself what tools might I need? Help me out! Thanks

Re: new suspension

don't listen to anyone who tells you to pick a specific setup. especially if all they can say is i love it. decide for yourself. you'll appreciate it way more.

to answer your question.. the benefits to coilovers is adjustability. and sometimes better performance. especially if you get adjustable shocks with them. you should establish an amount you don't want to spend more than. "a bit" doesn't mean anything. if i had to guess, you want something middle of the road.

but i'll give you information on the different setups. you can do a basic setup. with just shocks and springs. lots of people mix and match brands of springs and shocks. ie: kyb, koni... some people buy full sets from companies, ie tein, tokico...

there are a few decent coilover setups for a middle of the road budget. tein is probably gonna be your best bet for some of the cheapest coilovers. k sports iirc were around a grand. if not more. i think the cheapest setup i've ever seen for coilovers was around 6 or 700.

another option is ground control coilovers. or as i call them imitation coilovers. basically you pick your shocks and springs. and you get the ground control sleeves that go over the shocks and you can adjust your ride height that way. personally i think this is a REALLY CHEAP way to do it. this is for some reason a VERY popular method. in my opinion, the people who really love this setup haven't experienced a REAL suspension setup. i myself have changed a few peoples minds about GC coilovers just by giving them a ride in my car.

for the tools, it would help a lot to have air powered tools. otherwise, a decent set of metric sockets (3/8 drive), ratchet and breaker bar, open end/box end wrenches, and some sort of lubricant to help break up the rust on the nuts and bolts.

remember this always:
fast and cheap isn't reliable
reliable and cheap isn't fast
fast and reliable isn't cheap.
