Wheel Bearing Question

Hey guys I have a 94 lude and my wheel bearing is really really bad. Like if I decelerate to a stop goodness the whole car shakes. At the moment I just moved 5 hours away from that city and it's just sitting there with the bad wheel bearing and my destroyed linkage (don't ask) but I was wondering how hard it is to but that bearing in I've heard from some you need to press it out and from some you can buy some 10 dollar tool to pull it out. Also do you think that it is safe to drive it on a 220 mile trip? Thnx alot

Re: Wheel Bearing Question

Yes, have to press it out.

I know Harbor Freight sells some adapter kit (item 66829) but you still need some sort of press to get it out. You'd probably need a hydraulic press. That's probably around $200 in tools.
When I got mine done by a friend, he used a huge sledgehammer and bricks to get it off. Not a good idea since it took forever to get it off (unless you enjoy the exercise).

I believe you can buy a whole hub assembly and swap it out. Or just take your hub assembly out to get the old wheel bearing pressed out and new one pressed it. Some auto parts store will do the pressing I believe.

Re: Wheel Bearing Question

You can also sledgehammer it in. Put a wood block on top of it.

I don't know how much a shop would charge but I doubt it's much. It would take less than five minutes to get it off and put a new one in with a hydraulic press.
