EGR Questions?

I find it odd that searching "egr" under tech-talk comes up with no results. =/

Anyway, I was wondering if the computer will always catch a misfire. I don't have a CEL on, but I'm still slugging under 4k rpm when at engine temp. My friends car has much more gain on mine low end with his engine being the h22a1, and mine JDM h22a.

Is there a DIY guide to locating and cleaning the EGR valve? And any input on checking if the solenoid is working or not? Plugging it doesn't cause a CEL.

Re: EGR Questions?

Google proved better.

I dont know what code my engine is, supposed OBDII will show a clogged port code, but not OBOI. Anyway to tell from the engine vin?

Re: EGR Questions?

O.o

I doubt the engine VIN is going to tell you much about the current condition of your vehicle...

OBDI uses the flasher code system, which there should be tutorials and stuff lying around here...

Re: EGR Questions?

From what I read an OBDI engine will NOT flash a code for clogged EGR ports, while OBDII will.

If I have an OBDII, and I dont have a CEL, I dont have any problems with the egr then. If I have an OBDI, then its a 50/50 shot, since there is no code to go off to let me know if they're clogged or not.

Thats why I want to know.

Regardless though Ive already ordered the seals and caps, so I'm cleaning them anyway.

The only question I have left is the solenoid. How to determine if its bad or not.

Re: EGR Questions?

I also have an unrelated question. Where can I find the grille that covers the top of the headlights? Looks stylish. =p

Re: EGR Questions?

If you are 96+ you are OBDII, likewise of you are 95 or below then you are OBDI. Assuming that nothing has been fed with since she left the factory.

Normally cleaning the plug ports will fix it. I dont know how often the actual egr itself goes bad, but I'd imagine not very often. Just clean her out and if the problem persists then I'd look into picking up a new egr to replace it. If that doesnt fix it then take the new one back get your money back and continue troubleshooting.

Re: EGR Questions?

I'm most likely a OBDI then eh. Its an engine swap, so the engine is from 92-96, but you're never exactly sure.

Thanks for the heads up.

Re: EGR Questions?

Chances are its OBDI. There are also ways to tell if its an OBDI. Such as looking at the pin connector, etc.

There are also ways to tell if the EGR is functioning properly. Which involves taking it off... To be honest I forget how to test it, but its simple. Look at EGR cleaning tutorials online or on youtube and you should be able to find the procedure.

Mitchell has a fairly precise procedure for testing the EGR that does not involve taking it off. It involves a vacuum gauge though, so if you have one I can post up the procedure for you.
