first build, need guidance

Hello everyone, My name is Ben and i just joined the forum.

I've had my prelude for a while but have not had the space or the time to work on it. Now that I am, I'm in need of guidance.

I have a 1993 S with the F22A1 in it. 5 speed, of course. I got it for $100 off a guy who said when he was driving it, it just shut off on him and he had to have it towed home. Any ideas on what could cause this? I'm getting ready to do a compression test in about 20 minutes, so that should yield some answers.

If anyone has any tips that would help me out, or answer my question, that would be great.

Thanks

Welcome buddy! Nice deal on the Prelude, post up some pictures when you have it.

If it's not starting but cranks...

-Make sure the timing belt isn't popped-If it is, continuously cranking the engine can cause a lot of damage so I'd check this first to be safe
-Check for spark
-Check for fuel
-Compression like you said

Let's start there. Good luck man! Good to have you here.

Re: first build, need guidance

thanks guys. I did the compression test and i only got to test two cylinders but each did not get above 30. Obviously, something is wrong. Any ideas? I'm going to start taking the motor apart tomorrow if i have time.

Re: first build, need guidance

Wow, if the body is at all straight that's a hell of a deal bud.

Yikes, not over 30 in 2 of 4. Well, if multiple cylinders are minimal compression I would think more along the lines of head gasket. Testing the other 2 cylinders could point a bit more in that direction. Generally you don't lose 2 or more cyl on a bottom end. A head gasket would fit that description as well. (blown 2, not on ludes) So, with a little more investigation you may have an easy <$500 car or not so much. Either way, you will learn a lot about your car and worst case scenario, any honda enthusiest anywhere will buy a lude for $100. Just take your time, don't make assumptions or rip unnecesary things apart. Do it logically, think it through and ask questions. Well always help people out.

Re: first build, need guidance

As Nevrdun stated, check the other cylinders and let us know those readings and we can get a better idea.

As Havik stated, the EASIEST and first thing I would check would be the main relay under the steering column. If anything just to rule it out. Also, I would click on the links in his sig, they should help.
