What to take from a part out?

Met a guy at classes tonight whose friend is parting out a 94 and I'm wondering what I should take? I don't think anything engine wise would benefit me considering I want to do a swap sometime next year. He does have a manual tranny that he says was only on it for maybe 20,000 miles so that i was thinking about. He also has a AEM cai that I thought about getting. Also just some cosmetic thing like front lip, side skirts, fog lights, maybe tail lights. My questions are when looking at the tranny what are some signs/tells if its good or not worth my time? Also is the cai worth it or should I just wait and buy new after my swap? He said the front lip and sides have scratches I'm thinking that could be an easy fix? Thanks in advance.

Re: What to take from a part out?

Just take what you need maybe? Or are you trying to grab some stuff cheap to sell it later? In that case grab everything you can get for cheap and sit on it til someone will pay you more than you paid for it.

Re: What to take from a part out?

easy to fix a scratched lip. just make sure it's not cracked and none of the mounting tabs are broken

make sure you don't see any fluid leaking from the trans, other than driving the car there is no way to tell if the trans is good or not ( well you could open it up, but I doubt you're going to get that far into it)

if you can get the CAI for 75% or less than what a new one costs, buy it. just make sure it's in good condition (not scratched or dented up). get a new filter for it before you install it on your car, they should be changed ~every 15k miles.

hope that helps

It does help thanks...and the CAI I can get is only $50.00 and from what I saw there were no dents or scratches. And no I dont think I'll get that far into the tranny. So either I take my chance and trust his word or pass on it. Guess thats something I need to figure out.

Re: What to take from a part out?

With your past luck there is no way that the big man in the sky would let you get hosed on buying some stuff for your car. This is your turn to cash in on karma. Everything you get will work out.

Re: What to take from a part out?

Foglights if they're still there. Spoiler if there is one. Grab the intake, seats if they're leather, console if it's the non sex blocker, gauges if they're EL, fuel temp cluster since someone is ALWAYS buying those. There's other stuff too. Just grab what you can.

Re: What to take from a part out?

I went tonight after work I bought the front lip, sides, CAI and the corner lights for the front bumper cover. I was stuck debating the tranny all day until seeing it. I'm no mechanic or expert on transmissions but anything dirty to the point you cannot see anything on it and after wiping some off seeing a I guess crack would be the only way to describe it (not sure if that's what it was or not looked like it though) so I passed on it. The fog lights were smashed why he said he had multiple things to sell in "brand new/excellent" condition when they weren't is beyond me. He also stated he had a front bumper cover (which I need since I have none) in "mint condition" and nope not so much. I'm pretty sure I left with him pissed off but f*ck it don't be a d*ck and tell people you have this and that in whatever good condition and try to bull**** them. Like I said I'm not an expert or anything but that doesn't mean I'm stupid. But at least I got some of the things I wanted I guess. Eh back to searching for more of what I need it is....thanks again for all the help guys I appreciate it.

Re: What to take from a part out?

It's all good I would rather only get a few things than a lot and end up being beat in the head because most of the stuff was fu*ked. And $100.00 for the things I got wasn't bad in my eyes.

Re: What to take from a part out?

Again due to an emergency with my son I haven't been on here in awhile so I'm dragging this back up...the CAI I bought I'm wondering if it's possible to paint it another color? A blue car and red CAI doesn't do it for me. Sorry for the dog she's a little nosey.

Re: What to take from a part out?

Its definately do able. Something like a wrinkle finish or textured finish works well because its not so obvious it was rattle canned a differen color. Something to think about.
