Oil leak & rpm (butterflies?) QU ~

First with the oil leak. I have a leak right where the oil filter is strewed into the block. There's some sort of housing, looks like a big ring that connects the filter to the block.

Is there a seal in there that could be bad? Whats the best way to take it off, it almost looks pressed on.

And as for rpms. Excuse me if this makes zero sense, but do h22a have butterflies? From what I understand a car's butterflies open at around 4.8k to 5k, to give it an extra kick. I recently had a bad knock sensor that was slugging my car, once replaced the acceleration from 2-4k is better, but I still feel a kick at 4k rpm. Like the car is holding back or still slugging a little (from 2-4). Is this normal? My initial thought was that maybe the vtec's have a lower butterfly point since the cam's switch over at 5k, its not really necessary to have both happen? Something along those lines.

I have no CEL on.

Re: Oil leak & rpm (butterflies?) QU ~

I did some googleing and found out that v6 Acura's have a duel induction system. One butterfly opens at 3800 while another opens with the vtec at 4800.

Can anyone confirm this to be the same with the h22a? It certainly makes sense. Though there is a ticking noise at the back of my engine where the intake manifold is, my dad said it's the lever's moving, and that thicker oil would fix the problem. I'm running royal purple (10w-40), so I cant really go thicker so I'll try Castrol Edge next oil change.

Re: Oil leak & rpm (butterflies?) QU ~

1) please search "oil cooler o-ring". its a very VERY common place to leak from, and is certainly where yours is too

2) yes, our cars have Intake Air Butterflies (IAB's), which are exactly like you described; a dual-runner intake manifold, where the butterfly's are closed at lower RPM's which helps with torque, then they open at 4800 (i believe?? ) to increase top end power.

Re: Oil leak & rpm (butterflies?) QU ~

Mine seem to open at low 4s, upper 3s. I've heard of primary and secondary. I want to say the secondary open at around 4800-5000, right next to, or on the vtec.

Anyone have a primary open range? Just for the sake of my own knowledge. =p

And thanks for the name of the seal, I was looking on OEM honda and couldnt sort through all the little images trying to find it.

As far as the IAB's, I haven't come across any certain number. I've heard people say 3500, 4200, and 4800. Who knows. It's somewhere in there though.

I haven't revved a car up enough in so long I can't even remember haha.

Re: Oil leak & rpm (butterflies?) QU ~

Alright. If anyone is willing to give it a shot I'd much appreciate it. You can feel the difference for sure, the car seems much lighter, right on 4k rpm.

I just want to rule out the possibility that my manifold is hurting, since it has that tick in it. =/

Did you do your swap dbd? Or is the intake for h22 and h23 the same? ;o

Re: Oil leak & rpm (butterflies?) QU ~

They're the same intake manifolds. Although the IAB's might be set to open differently between the different ECU's. On my H22 though, I know it wasn't as high as 4800. It had to be between 3500 and 4200.

Re: Oil leak & rpm (butterflies?) QU ~

Alright, I have the stock h22a ecu, whatever jdm comes with. Thanks for the help. Its not a real big concern, so whenever you're in your car next and want to step on it a little would be good.

I'm being very picky on this because I read about power loss's, and even though I fixed the knock sensor, there were a lot of other possibilities from the threads I read. I just want to make sure I solved it, and its just not my imagination.

Re: Oil leak & rpm (butterflies?) QU ~

Actually, I misread your post. I thought you said 4500, not 3500. >< Yea then, 3.5k-4.2k would be the same for me.

I don't have an CEL, and my car isn't "slow," so I'll just get over it. =p I guess I have the mentality its a lambo or something when it isnt. My buddy's h22a seems faster, but thats from weight reduction.

My qu's are answered, thanks all.

Re: Oil leak & rpm (butterflies?) QU ~

The intake air bypass diaphragm (IAB) opens at 4.8K on a H22A, right before Vtec. There is also a intake control diaphragm/valve in the factory intake system that is part of the resonator, which opens at 3.5k rpm.
