Re: so sick of my car wanna get rid of it right now

part of the plan of buying an old car...its worth it to some degree..if its only a $200 part then suck it up and do it. you know all the problems with your car so ,its better then getting another used car with more problems, or a new car with high payments that could've helped fix your lude.

Re: so sick of my car wanna get rid of it right now

well wtf is wrong with it? It can't be much worse than my lude's problems. I test drove it and it ran great. I drove it for a week and the tranny locked me out of all gears. Turns out the clutch springs came loose and were jamming up between the flywheel and clutch plate. $725 replacement due to lack of time and a place to work on the lude. I get another two weeks down the road with the new clutch, no problems until I notice a small knocking sound while driving to work on the highway. I slowed down, oil light comes on. F***CK! I slow down even more and then I get to about 45mph and POOF a ploom of 007-style smoke comes from the back of my car. I pulled over and walked to work. Got the truck towed to my job and upon re-inspection, the block had a fist sized hole in it. BAM!!!!!! New motor install $1900 with all new seals, timing belt, water pump and CV axle. My JDM F22B. --- Now the FKER won't start. BOOOO.

Lets do some 1+1.

$2200 Prelude Purchase
+
$725 Clutch
+
1900.00 motor
=
$4825 put into this car. Not to mention the tow bills (twice) of $100+ and the tow dolly rental of $65.00 the third time.

That's $5,090 tied up in this piece of sh*t that's sitting in my apartment complex parking spot! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

Re: so sick of my car wanna get rid of it right now

well pretty much if you get rid of it and buy another car(if its used) then you'll go through the same thing all over again. thats what happens when you buy used cars of people/private sellers. but once you fix all the bads then its all good and you don't gotta worry bout it for a while! thats how i was too my car had lotta problems and wanted to sell and get another one but i was like what if the next car is in same/worse condition lol

Re: so sick of my car wanna get rid of it right now

I feel you bro. Im still struggling with my Lude. I fix one then then something else goes wrong. I've had the car for a year and some already. These guys have a point. Just fix the problems. It's cheaper. At the end you'll be happy when you have everything nice and tight. Then mods start comming in. I'm sur many people went through the same thing. Just hang it there. Don't get rid of it.

I think we all been there my cars last owner wired the taillights to a switch, put megan springs on stock sturts now they are blown, stock exhaust was so rusted it fall off while coming home from walmart, it was 5 different colors, and missing interior pieces, and my list can keep going, but dont give up see this as a chance to better your car.

Re: so sick of my car wanna get rid of it right now

Im trying to get rid of mine. If you guys think you can fight through the problems, then great. However, I've put 10g into my prelude since Nov 2008. And you know what? Its still a worthless Honda that STILL doesn't have everything working proper, doesn't have any of the new technology, or creature comforts, STILL wont be able to sell for anything worth more than the metal its made of, and STILL doesn't make me happy.

I've gotten into something 2.0L and boosted, and I couldn't be happier!

Re: so sick of my car wanna get rid of it right now

Damn Shatterbox. what's a 2.0L turbo? thinking gti, could be wrong. 10K is what I call true love. when My SI 4ws died, one major part out and and a donation center later, I made back 70% of what i spent and had fun. major lesson? find the parts you NEED cheap first, like a motor.

Daltontj, there is always something around the corner to fix. it's a question if you want a wait a little longer or "prepare for the repair". Body-wise, if the damamge is street legal, leave it. if you really aren't feeling the car, (you wish a tornado would claim your car) get it running, pass it along. If it's a pizza car keep it and let it make money for your next ride. there is always a solution.

Re: so sick of my car wanna get rid of it right now

But hey, i know how frustrating it is, when i go to meets with my crew, my prelude likes to embarrasses me. She struggles to start with shes surrounded by other cars but turns on just fine when we're alone. Shes a bitch, and I've spent at least half a year trying to figure out was it was. I went through so much money, for spark plugs, spark plug wires, etc. just to find out that the previous owner changed the belts and left it at least 2 or 3 teeth off. So now i have to take it to a mechanic to do that for me cuz i don't have the frikken tools!! and i don't know how to time a belt either....but i can change my own oil though ^.~ <3

like someone else said 'perfection is a process, not a product'

inner and outer tie rods need replacement but somebody stripped out stuff out trying to fix the inner tie rods before and the only way to fix it is to pretty much damage and ripout my powersteering rack and replace it. the new rack comes with the new boots already installed but this is all costing about a grand. since this stuff all has to come from honda

I've got that center rack and pinion/steering gearbox if you wanna buy it used and save sum dough. We'd both benifit from it. I need to make my money back from it actually. I don't have the inner tie rod for the L side and neither of the outer tie rods but It's in good shape. I just didn't end up needing it. I first thought that I really NEEDED to replace that center part b/c I thought the threads were stripped but I replaced my tie rod and she's driving fine... let me know man! I'd be happy to help you out. I'll sell it for cheaper than what I paid for it.

I feel ALL u guys. I'm in the same F#$%in boat! I knew my lude had been thru hell n back just by lookin at her but I got ripped off! Paid $1300 b/c that's all I could afford. I have put another $300 into it and still goin. My baby needs a new windshield, almost complete new suspension, turn signals, an alignment, rack and pinion boot, and a FAL slim fan (which is sorta my fault, decided to put a half size rad when my stock one sprung a leak. Now I need a fan that fits lol) totalling about another $350-550!

Keep on truckin guys. We own BEAUTIFUL cars with a lot of potential. Not the most reliable Honda, or the best on gas mileage out there but I LOVE MY CAR...

you do realize you will be dumping even more money into the car on upkeep of that built motor. if you're whining about things now i would definitely advise you NOT to build your motor.

I advise you TO build it, then inevitably get tired of the problems again and sell it to me.

Re: so sick of my car wanna get rid of it right now

i know this might seem a little strange but there is a lot of people out there who admire these cars. and all it takes is some jealous mofo saying 'thats a bad ass motor' and before you know it your cars jinxed and some twat comes and rear ends you or something breaks down. i have had it happen so many times that now i just avoid people and their comments...just stick with it and do the best you can!!

They may be old cars but they are still more reliable than most cars on the road today!!

Rebuilt rack and pinion is $200-300 or so on ebay.

The boots can be had at a junkyard. Or $8 on ebay.

Inner, outer tie rods for both sides are $60 or so.

Re: so sick of my car wanna get rid of it right now

I hate threads like these; you bought a car ranging from 92-96. What did you really expect guy? And where on earth are you getting your prices from? Instead of running to honda how about you do a google search or two. I scanned your rack and pinion post, a grand? My entire assembly was 220 dollars, and I put it in myself.

Lets say you drop $20,000 on a new car, maybe an acura tsx.
-Prelude base ($1500)
-Partially rebuilt trans ($1100)
-New suspension ($1300)
-30k miles engine; if needed ($900, no trans since rebuilt)
-Electrical overhaul ($500-$900)
-Misc ($1000)

And you're still 14-13 grand in the clear.

The only time I will buy a new car is if I'm really rolling in the dollars. An older car IS older, but its simply. There is less crap to go wrong, less computer to try and figure out. I'm at the trans stage, next comes the suspension. By the end of the year, 80% of my "****ty" lude will be new.

I dont know exactly what I'm trying to get at. Learn to rebuild your car > 20k on a new car. =/

In order to learn to rebuild your car, you need a garage or a place to work on it. I used to live in an apartment and I had to do all the work on the parking lot (though not worrying about spills was good though).

If you don't have a garage, you have no place to store tools and spare parts handily. You have to haul everything out and then back in again everytime. Plus, if your parking lot is small, people will park beside you and you have no place to work anymore.

If you live in an apartment in a city you don't know many people, then there's the art of buying used cars that's not a money pit.

Re: so sick of my car wanna get rid of it right now

I did 80% of the work on my car with a 100 dollar set of sockets. Few minor pick up's here and there.

I'm not talking about completely rebuilding your engine. But running to a mechanics shop because your o2 sensor is bad, or you need cv boots put in, isn't what anyone should be doing when buying a used car from the mid / early 90's.

As for space, all the space you need is the space that your car is sitting on. Figure a couple of feet on each side to slip a jack under and put on stands. Or if you don't have space at your apt, go to the park for an afternoon, or some public parking spot and do a couple hours of work.

I'm not saying everyone who owns a 4th gen lude needs to learn to get their hands dirty, but dont bitch when you buy a 17 year old car, then cry about it costing so much because you don't take the second to look up a DIY and attempt.

Not you as in you, you as in a general buyer. I can tell you my lude didnt come with a carfax. There is an art to buying a low matience used car, its called going from 03 and up.
