Re: Rack and pinion

Oh I was just wondering because my friends second opinion was to replace the whole axle because that would eventually go out anyways. But only my rack and pinion and cv boots are effed up. I'm just trying to save some money, so should I just replace those or the axles in the long run?

Re: Rack and pinion

What part of the rack and pinion is screwed up? Pics would help A LOT!

CV joints too??? Bummer, idk about those but I've got the rack and pinion/steering gearbox part if you wanna buy it. My tie rod disconnected on the drivers side awhile back and I ended up just replacing the inner tie rod and it worked. If you do HAVE to replace that center steering gearbox fair warning. Its a bitch! Thats why I didnt' do it. I do know were to find the thread that shows you exactly how to replace it tho. Thought the threads on mine were bad but the new tie rod/ball joint did the trick...
Need any help just let me know.

Good luck

Re: Rack and pinion

we're gonna try and save you some money and time .. but before that, we need to know why you think your rack and pinion is messed up .. what problems are you experiencing with your steering ?

Typical symptom of CV axle failure. Check for torn boots

R&P doesn't go bad unless you're in an accident or you hit the R&P directly on a curb.

Re: Rack and pinion

@Professor7980 CV axle would be the normal diagnosis, maybe a ball joint or strut.
@mr0x that is generally true, however extended hard use, as well as bad maint. can cause it to fail over time.

Sounds like a bad CV (if it is ripped and spraying grease, it prolly needs fixed.) Always worth looking at all the possible problems, and keep in mind that the symptoms of part X failing may be very similar to Z+Y failing at the same time.

Anyhow, off my soap box, good luck OP and Prof!

Isn't a test for a bad R&P to check if the R&P boots are full of power steering fluid or have burst from too much fluid?

Re: Rack and pinion

If your boots are full of fluid you have a problem, they arent designed to hold fluid but to keep debris out of the cylinders that the rack would otherwise pull in, breaking the the seals on the system.

Troubleshoot Rack & Pinion Steering gives a great description and explanation, as well as an ok troubleshoot.

Re: Rack and pinion

Strut tower: I could see the strut tower being involved, but I doubt it. Just my OP, but check to see if it is obviously damaged. However, I've never heard of the tower doing that, usually the struts themselves I think. There are a host of parts I have dealt with in which clunking happens when the suspension is under stress. Lift your car, look for torn boots and used up bushings. If you know how to check the UBJ and LBJ, do so, otherwise take a look at our online manual, I think it has the procedure on it.

Re: Rack and pinion

well the boots are in great shape recently replaced, and maybe he was referring to the struts themselves because it doesnt do anything besides clunk and has some drift to the right but otherwise it aint bad.
