Car Problems =\

I drive a 1996 Honda Prelude Si. Lately I've been having problems starting the car, and today when i drove to work after parking and turning the car off i noticed white smoke coming from under the hood. I don't know ANYTHING about cars so pls just give me some ideas on where to look and what i should be looking for. Thanks

Smoke?

Thats a little, erm, vague. You need to look at it more closely. Such as, make SURE its not from your exhaust for whatever reason, be sure its from under the hood. What did it smell like?

Smoke is usually 3 things; something is burning like a belt, or wires, or spilt / leaking liquid is heating up and smoking, or a failed radiator, but that would engulf the car in smoke for overheating.

Did you put any fluids in it recently?

All and all, more info please. Drive it and look at where the smoke is really coming from.

The smoke is coming from under the hood, its white smoke, it DOES smell like something is burning and this isn't the first time i've smelled this but i never really thought to much of it. I did just do an oil change but thats it.

I did find out that the steering fluid is leaking. But i was told not to worry about it... I don't think thats the cause of the problem and again i'm still having problems starting the car. I'm going to buy a new battery to see if that fixes the starting problem but the smoke and burning smell still concerns me.

Can you pop the hood and see where the smoke is coming from exactly? Take a pic if you can and post it here.

I poped the hood and looked but i really couldnt see exactly where it was coming from.. It does seem to be getting worse though.. I will take a pic next time i start it up in about an hour and a half or so and post it here.

Re: Car Problems =\

I would go to a mechanic for a free estimate, let them tell you whats wrong, then come to us on how the fix the exact problem.

White smoke and trouble starting, it sure doesnt sound good. I would at least stop driving it before you make it worse. Is it a lot of smoke?

Re: Car Problems =\

No its not a lot of smoke, just enough to see when i'm stoped at a red light ect. The starting problems were caused by the battery, which i replaced for about $86. But the smoke has yet to stop. I'm worried that if i ask a mechanic to figure out what is causing the smoke that they'll force me to get the problem fixed there as well. Or they'll just charge me to look.
