Desperately need some help!

Hey guys. I'm in need of some help. I've got a 94 lude with H22. I was going down the highway earlier, hit about 120 or so. No big deal, done it before. As I slow down I notice that the tone of my exhaust is drastically different. When I got off the highway it didn't wanna stay running. I had to keep the throttle open some. Everything under the hood sounds normal but the exhaust sounds like **** now, on top of it not wanting to stay running once I get it started. The wierd part is that the Check Engine light isn't on. So I can't even test it that way.

What I've tried:
-checked all the wires and made sure they were connected
-made sure she was full of oil
-checked the PCV valve

What I'm thinking and how I'm gonna test it:
-clogged cat? I'm gonna pull the front O2 sensor to vent the exhaust to see if there is just too much back pressure in the system.
-bad EGR valve? Not sure how I'd test it
-spark plugs? I wasn't able to pull the plugs when I originally checked it. Out of all the tools I had with me in the car, I didn't have my plug socket.

Any ideas? I need some help bad. I need to have it running at peak, or at least safe, again by the end of today (27 Sep 10). Please help!!!

Re: Desperately need some help!

So another thing that has popped up, I'm thinking I might have blown my piston ring(s). I guess I'll find out once I pull the plugs. Anyone got any other ideas? Comments? Something to help me out here.

Re: Desperately need some help!

hey just to chime in you need to check basic ,check timing and do compression test.Do you have check engine light on ,check every thing around make sure grounds are tight .Post your findings when done .

Re: Desperately need some help!

So I pulled the plugs and sure enough, one of them is covered in oil. Looks like a blown piston ring to me.

Re: Desperately need some help!

Lesson learned. Lol. I'm not usually like that. I shouldn't have been driving pissed and I'm man enough to admit that. I figured out the problem. Turns out I spun the timing belt. I still have good compression in each cylinder. I'd definitely rather change a timing belt the replace rings.

If you jumped timing, you might have bent valves. Better pull that head.

Good point. I was thinking about that. Luckily the valves are easy to reach.

If you got any damage uptop, I know for a fact that there are at least 2 complete H22 heads in the FS section at good prices.

Lol just giving you a hard time man. I did Some research and found out that there is enough clearence between the pistons and valves that the pistons wont slap the valves, on the h22a1 of course. Any truth?

I can attest to it being an interference motor. Ive seen every single valve get bent to hell on both an H23a1 and an H22a that broke a Tbelt.

Re: Desperately need some help!

If you just just jumped timing you might be fine, but there's still a slight possibility you had some piston/valve contact. If you're timing belt actually BROKE, it'd be a lot more likely.

Re: Desperately need some help!

Timing belt is just spun, not broke. Luckily. When the cat is bumped but not started the rockers are still moving, indicating that the belt is there, just messed up.

Re: Desperately need some help!

Even if your belt skipped teeth it could have damaged valves. Just depends on how far. I can tell everyone from experience that a broken belt with most definately result in bent valves.

Bought my car that way. 14 valves bent.

Re: Desperately need some help!

So, it's been awhile and the prelude is still down. I've tried a number of things. I have narrowed it down. I know that the problem is in cylinder 3, however I don't know what exactly the problem is. When the car is running, I can pull the plug wire in cylinder 3 out and it doesn't affect the way the engine is running. Here's everything I've done so far:

Replaced the ICM
Tested for spark (spark is good)
New spark plug
New fuel injector

We are also hearing a hissing sound on the back of the motor when the key is on but the engine is off. What my question is now is would a crack either in a specific location on the IM or IM gasket cause this issue?

When you shut the motor off have someone depress the brakes while you're outside the car listening. Mine does that and I think it's just the brake booster but not sure. If the noise changes when you hit the brake pedal..not the engine. Check your ITB vacuum lines and others too, could just be something that simple.

As for cylinder 3..have you done compression tests? And are you sure that cylinder is getting fuel?
