AWS?

How can I tell if I have an AWS? The original badging has been changed, is it in the VIN or can I look for some sort of steering in the rear? thanks

Re: AWS?

Tie rods attached to the rear wheels and a steering rack along the rear axle are surely one sign, but easier to look for the control unit attached to the rear bulkhead in the trunk, the 4WS warning light on the instrument panel, or the VIN...for a U.S./Canadian car it should read "JHMBB2x6...", where x is either a 1 (manual) or 2 (automatic) transmission. The "6" indicates 4WS. That only works for VINs lfor North American cars...there's a different combination for other markets.

Re: AWS?

I believe (**not 100% but pretty sure**) that the only fourth gens that didn't come with 4WS had the chassis code BA8. The others (BB1/2/4) all did. Happy to be proven wrong though.

Re: AWS?

VIN is easy to tell and I think instead of a lower control arm with two legs I think its only 1 leg. I'm probably wrong, cant remember the proper way to tell.

im pretty sure BA8 is a 3rd gen.
the 4ws engine code would be for an h23 motor, which was used for both 4ws and non 4ws preludes, so you wouldnt be able to tell from that.

If you really want to know, just look at the speedo, if its 4ws itll have a 4ws steering light on it..... OR um, turn the wheel and watch to see if the back tire moves

I know of 3 local 4gs that had BA8 stamped on them. All were S trim with the SOHC F22.

Re: AWS?

ba8 is the 4th gen s model with the f22a1 motor. bb1 is vtec bb2 is si or si 4ws. look in the upper right corner next to your speedometer. if it has a 4ws light you have a 4ws prelude.

Japanese/Pacific and European market cars were available in a wider array combinations, and use a different set of VINs. To make it worse, VINs don't correlate across markets. For the Japanese/Pacific market, you're correct -- the 4th gen BA8 chassis was a 4WS SOHC variant. IIRC, BA9 was the same car with 2WS.

Re: AWS?

pop ur trunk and see if there is a huge square lump on the back support on ur left...if the cover/trunk wall lining is not there, then u will see a huge metal box...and also yes, u will see a "4WS" light on the top right of ur dash or by the top right of ur speedometer when u turn ur car on...

Turn your steering wheel and look to see if the rear wheels are also turning?
