Knocking sound?

ok so i bought my lude about a month ago and after a few weeks the car has stated making a knocking sound from what i have gathered its a bearing gone ether in one of the rods or main bearing BUT you see i have no signs of metal in my oil, i have dropped the oil pan and everything appears to be ok from the rods, I have not seen the oil pressure light come on what so ever, the knocking is there as soon as i start the car and only at low rps(idle) you cant hear it. i drive this car everyday about 50kms and i have drove it aprox 2500kms sense it has started. So it cant be a bearing or my engine would a been toasted by now. if some one could give me some ideas on what this can be would be muchly appreciated

I'm going to go ahead and semi-quote neck on this one.

If it's knocking, don't answer. It's almost always bad news bears.

That is, in fact, the reason I said, "semi-quote." I couldn't remember the whole thing, lol.

Re: Knocking sound?

it has both the 02 sensor cels and also one that has to do with the fuel injection cant remember what it was called. someone said that if the fuel injection wasnt working right it could cause it to knock but i cant see that....once in a while the car will have some major studering when you give it gas but does not happen very offen eather. its a maajor knocking sound not ticking. im going out now to get a video

Re: Knocking sound?

what grade / type of fuel are you using???

My exact same engine had what sounded like a valve knock on anything under 92 Octane.

Re: Knocking sound?

that may be it, i was thinking the same thing as lilmsprelude. i've heard tons of stuff about lower octane fuel making the motors knock. i ran 87 one time when i first bought the car and it was a bit noiser than it is now on the 93 octane. have you checked the timing? and is the distributor at the right angle? i've heard that people have tilted the distributor to advance timing and if its at too high of a degree the engine will knock. maybe the distributor was installed incorrectly if it was ever messed with? just throwing ideas out there

Re: Knocking sound?

Now that you mention it, when i bought the car buddy had just replaced the plugs wires and rotor cap...he could have left something untightend. i might see if i can borrow a timing light and check er out or even just give the dizzy a little turn to see if the knock gets better.
could anything in the transmisson area make such a sound??, mines grinds in 3rd and 5th and has been like that for years. the vibration from the knocking can be felt though the shifter and cluch peddle but not the gas or brake peddles

Re: Knocking sound?

if its not gear i dont see why it would make that noise. it sounds engine related to me. check out the dizzy see if somethings up there. unless somethings loose and the vibration from the motors moving something??

Re: Knocking sound?

okay , bro , i just that same noise ,and it could be the crank moving ,side ways ,mine engine drop the thrust bearing washers in the pan , i thought it was my tranny ,it was the thrust washers the keep the crank from moving side side lateral ,one way to check is to see if the crank pulley moves out some and if it does then the thrust washer are coming out or out off spec .in thickness.Question ,do you feel clutch pedal vibration ? if yes that the thrust washer spacing in and out.hope this helps some.Let me know if need more info .

Re: Knocking sound?

well after i got home from work today i poped the hood and losedned the 3 dizzy bolts i turned it towards the fire wall and the knocking got worse but the further i turned it to the front of the car the knocking began to go away and was pretty much gone! so i tightend them bolts back on and took her for a drive and it studdered constantly and ran like shat,,,opps so i guess i got a litle over joyed by the sound dissipering and not paying attention to how far ived turned my timing haha.so i have managed to get it a lil bit better but the sound still there..
to johnl114...wouldnt that make my belts squeel like crazy tho? if the main pully was moving in and out..but i will check that out tomoro as its dark out now

Re: Knocking sound?

you have to get the angle perfect. its most likely hard to get it exact but you could probably get it. glad i could help a bit. maybe it just skipped time with the belt? it sounds timing related now that you tried the dizzy thing. so i'd look into that.

I just picked up a 1995 with a H23a and am having the same noise. Did you have any other damage caused buy the crank moving around or was everything ok once replaced the thrust washers?

Re: Knocking sound?

So just a little update on my lude. The engine finally died the other day. it was the piston pin that was worn out but it lasted 6 months and 30 thousand km before the rod bearing ate it self. so im giving credit to the engine for taking a beating for so long i wasn't going to stop driving it till it blew haha
