Chip on Key & Small button?

I was looking at my car's key and I noticed for the longest time that it has a button on it. It can actually
be clicked but never really did anything. I decided to pull the key off the casing or what ever you call it,
and noticed that it has a chip on it. Any one know what its supposed to be for?

Also noticed that one of the door handles has a little square across to where the key goes in, but
the other door handle doesn't.

Any one know about this? Or what its for? I though it was a safety feature that the car can only be
turned on with its original key, but i guess not because I made a copy of the key and worked fine.
