Where is the Starter Motor on a 93 Lude Si A/T?

I know this is a total noob question!!! But my lude did a weird thing yesterday. It wanted to turn over on start but sputered out. Tried a few times with the same results. I poked and proded a few wires on the battery, distibutor, what i thought was the starter and poof!!! it started no problem. Since yesterday I've had 10 sucessful starts with no problems. Basically I want to know where the stater motor/solenoid is? I think its right above the alternator on the engine but I could be wrong. Again, thanks for the help. I'm no mechanic, but I want to learn. Thanks.

The start solenoid is right on the starter, its usually gold looking. But if you messed with the battery cables and distributor cables and it started up, I'd say you have a loose line, one of something you touched.

Next time it happens, play with one wire at a time, and try to start it. When it starts, the line you just touched is the one to look at.

I just had the problem with my starter, it wouldn't turn over at all. Touched some wires and it worked. Came to find the starter ground had a loose nut.

Thanks Terror, but where exactly is the starter motor? I can't find a detailed location in the manual. where is it located in the engine? I think it's on the left side if youre standing in front of the car looking back. But I'm not sure.

Update!! I found it. It's on the left side of the engine under the radiator hose. I could see the solenoid and the little wire that hooks up to it. It looks like a pain in the ass to get to and inspect for loose wires and such. Thanks.

You're in the right area. Find the spot where the engine number is stamped on the block and go left, or below and forward of the distributor. You'll see a large black cylinder with the solenoid sitting atop it.

Re: Where is the Starter Motor on a 93 Lude Si A/T?

I JUST WENT OUT AND TOOK A PICTURE TOO! In a towel non the less. Hah.

Yea, its really not that hard though. 2 bolts hold the starter to the engine. I'd take out the battery, makes more room. Unbolt the bracket on the top of the starter too, if you have one, and move over your radiator hose out of the way some. The first bolt is right there on top, and the second is under it, sort of a pain in the ass. You'll need a few attachments for your ratchet to get to it.

As for the wires, there's really only 3. You have a small clip, that goes onto the solioid. Make sure its on there tight. Then you have a main power line, connected to the starter from the battery pretty much. And then a ground line, which is from the base of the starter, to the solenoid of the starter, a self ground (thats where my nut was loose).

I dont feel you need to mess with the starter though, if you didnt touch any of the cables on it. Check your battery ground, you mentioned you messed with it. Make sure all your terminals are tight.

And if its starting now, leave it be. :)

Picture I took, mines old, so there is no gold. But the solenoid is the smaller cylinder on the top. Right next to the battery, under the radiator hose.
