good deal? need some info before purchase

So i came across what seemed a good deal to me on CL. 92 Prelude Si with a 'JDM V-Tec' engine not sure if h22 or etc and has a rebuilt tranny. but as the ad says timing belt went..either valves bent or not, either way itd need work i know this. But my 92 si right now has some sort of knock or tick in the engine (h23) and the body of mines is in way worse shape and the trannys sh*t, so if i bought this lude for $550 and if valves were bent could i jus replace the head? Im taking auto body at my tech center this year so i could do body work there i was just wondering if this seemed like a good deal to all you guys out there whether i fix it and drive it and use mine as parts or vice versa?

1992 Honda Prelude JDM V-Tec

Just confirmed its an H22 =]

Re: good deal? need some info before purchase

I'd buy it for $500. I'd be prepared to spend approximately $1000 to fix things though. That's if you do the work yourself.

you should find out the specifics of when the timing belt broke. At what speed/RPM/gear the belt broke. that will give you a clue as to the extent of the damage. Though the only real way to tell is to remove the head. You might need new pistons if the valves made contact and damaged the slugs. It might have cause damage to the head itself when the valves bent.

Re: good deal? need some info before purchase

buy it for parts for 250 lol. thats an ugly prelude my friend. save your money and buy a proper VTEC model. If its a 92 then someone swapped it and from the looks of things it doesnt look very well kept.

Re: good deal? need some info before purchase

I'm w/camshafted. Especially if u say ur car isn't runnin the greatest. Y waste money on someone elses headache? Spend the money to fix ur car. U could buy a tranny off someone (prolly here) for like 200. I bought an m2s4 (h23) tranny for 150 locally. Great condition too. As for the body work if ur gettin ready to take auto classes just fix it. I'm gettin ready to paint my car (doin it myself 1st time) and materials will only cost me 300. That's for OEM color and everything else I need (hardener thinner clear primer etc). If u do decide to spend the money always always ALWAYS haggle. Money talks and bs walks. Tell him u have 250 cash today. Dnt ever just pay what they want. A closed mouth won't get fed. Never hurts to ask questions. All they could say is no. It won't hurt ya I promise lol.

Re: good deal? need some info before purchase

thanks everyone who replied back. i know it needs work (to say the least) but im looking for a winter project and i know all you think its a waste of time and money lol but its what i want to do. the body work on my car needs ALOT more attention considering my rear panels are bondo and rust and ones dented in like hell. Also the fact that my frames bent really screws me over because whenever i open my passenger side door it hits my fender and its already cracked it, though i dont care much because there shizzy z3 fenders which i hate haha. Also i could buy a used tranny for $200 but id rather just buy a car with a rebuilt tranny for 550 considering its got all the parts i need and a brand new starter. but thank you all for replying though they werent the most positive haha

Oh and hondaverno trust me ive looked everywhere in my state for a lude there hard to come by here haha atleast in my price range. and i know i could buy a new motor but i want to learn more, this is also going to be a huge learning process for me

Re: good deal? need some info before purchase

Ok well after talking to the guy more, it doesnt seem to me like the timing belt broke. Again correct me if im wrong but the engine should atleast turn over if your timing belt broke no? well he said the car wouldnt even turn over so im thinking maybe something electrical related or possibly needs a new distributor or what not? thoughts?
