high rpm on an h23?

I've been reading around and a lot and it seems the general consensus is being afraid to rev the h23 close to rev limiter. I understand the h23 kinda dies off up in the revs, but why is this? Is it really that common to spin a bearing or develop a rod knock by revving a h23,; or are people just paranoid? One would think honda engineers set the rev limiter at a very safe limit.

Re: high rpm on an h23?

The general consensus is all wet...I've bounced my H23 off the rev limiter for a good portion of it's 238k life with no ill effect. Likewise, most of the 4th gen road race cars out there are H23-powered, and there's no reputation for spinning bearings at high revs. It does run out of breath around 5500 rpm on the stock cam, simply because the cam's optimized to peak a bit lower -- that's just the nature of a fixed-profile cam. In competition, I usually shifted between 5200 and 5500, but that had nothing to do with fearing the limiter. Even now I'll run it up over 5000 for fun without worries.
