Please help me before I dishonor myself!

I have a 1994 Prelude that I LOVE! I put 175,000 miles on her and just found out I have burned a valve. I have decided to buy a new engine/auto transmission from a place that gets them from Japan with less than 50,000 miles on them.

I am considering replacing my stock engine (F22A1) with a V-Tech (H22A, H22A1). The guy at Japan Direct says I shouldn't do it because I will go from 30 MPG to 25 MPG. I had always heard Vtechs have the same if not better gas mileage.

Here are my questions:
1) Should I go for the Vtech and will it have about the same MPG?

2) If I do, other than the computer and "3 wires" will there be anything else I need to do?

3) Any suggestion on who to get the engine from. I have been ripped off in the past and want to make sure I make a good decision.

I am so happy to find a bunch of Prelude lovin' bastards (and hopefully bastardettes) to rejoice/commiserate with! I love to see your cars and see the modifications y'all make.

Thanks!
I bow to Royal 1st Family of Preludes!

Re: Please help me before I dishonor myself!

First:

Now, my H22A1 VTEC Prelude gets about 27mpg. This is acceptable to me.

You'll have to wire up your VTEC solenoid (and pressure sensor, IIRC). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I dunno where to get an engine. I've had good luck with Tiger Japanese Home before, but others have had bad luck. Everywhere has a downfall.

Having Vtec is TOTALLY worth the 5mpg. It's only less because you won't keep your foot out of it :)

That picture exists because you're far from the only one that's said that.

I about to buy another h22a from them actually :)

Re: Please help me before I dishonor myself!

hmotors is definitely the way to go. If you want to keep your 30 mpg, use the f22 tranny, it has longer gears that are suited better for gas mileage, that being said, dont do it. You won't get the full h22 experience if u keep your old tranny :P Trust me, I have a non vtec tranny, and its noticeably slower :(

WHY would you want an auto man? Just get the H22 manual tranny, soo much better You will be losing a ****ton of power by sticking with an auto.

Re: Please help me before I dishonor myself!

1st off....that pic is epic. Love it. That bein said...H motors all the way. The only other place I would even consider would be JDMEnginecorp.com. But HMO is the most reputable around. As far as trannys go....I have the h23 trans in my car n I love it. Personally I think that's the best way to go. Gears are shorter the F22 but not as short as H22. Good tq too. N def gotta have a 5spd bro. Autotragic = fail lol.

Re: Please help me before I dishonor myself!

Yeah I'd go with Hmotors. Definitely a great place to buy from. Their motors have low miles, and they tell you everything you need to know about the motor. (Compression numbers, miles, etc.)

Re: Please help me before I dishonor myself!

h22 is an easy swap if you do go h22 make sure its for your year obd1 or obd2 there is alot of diff in the wiring and sensors from one to the other . if you get a jdm motor for your year you only need to run wires for the v tec solenoid the jdm obd1 cars have no pressure sensor to go with the vtec solenoid . just the vtec switch . plus one to the h23 trans gearing had an lsd h23 trans in the 93 with a built h22 and i got over 30mpg

Between me and my friends we have bought about 7 engines from TigerJapanese and never had any problems, although I have heard they are either hit or miss, but I trust them with my business. Lol.
