Bring the experts for this question

Alright first of all I own the 94 S and which means I have the F22 and the
M2L5 Tranny. Alright this problem was here when I first bought the car, I could barely get it into 1st 3rd or 5th only these gears though 2nd 4th and R were all great. So when I got to working on it one of the common problems is the fluid so I got the fluid changed and then it worked great I rarely had problems with any gears and everything was great. So one day I went to the carwash and I washed and waxed my car and after that my 1st 3rd and 5th were gone even worse then before, now I cannot get into those gears at all, the only thing that will happen is when you push super hard is you can hear grinding as it goes in but it rarely goes in. The grinding is not the synchros because synchros is grinding as it goes in not as its already in. We don't think it's the clutch because 2nd 4th and R work fine. So we think it's either the tranny gears are worn or the linkage is ****ed which we tried tonight and nolonger think that. So if I do need a new tranny can I swap a H22, H23, or any other type of tranny like a civic tranny? Any type of help is greatly appreciated if you know the answer for sure please email me at
chabit15@yahoo.com sorry about the length but this is a weird question.

Re: Bring the experts for this question

I would hazard a guess at the synchros, but you seem pretty certain it's not. Linkage is a likely suspect since all the gears on the same plane (1/3/5) are affected.

If you do need a new trans you can get almost any other Prelude or Accord trans. Look for transaxles that match H or F series engines. (Obviously the trans that goes with the F20C/F22C won't work)

Yeah I would get an H22 tranny personally, short gears are win. You can't use a B series tranny though because the H2b adapter plate was never made for the prelude.

Re: Bring the experts for this question

a good way to tel you if its the linkage, disconnect it from the tranny. engage the gears with the levers on the tranny. if it feels the same its something in your tranny. if you don't feel any problems its your linkage or possibly the shfiter itself.

i'm really confused at where you're talking about it not being syncros.. when you get grinding as its going into gear thats a syncro grinding.

Alright if it was the synchros it would grind as it goes into gear. Mine grinds as its fully in and the grinding is it not fully in. And we did disconnect the linkage thnx for the ideas tho

The B18C5 are in the Integra Type R's. B18B1 are in the Integra LS's with no vtec, and the B18C1 are in the Integra GSR's with vtec.

Re: Bring the experts for this question

And the b16a2's are in the civic Si's. The b16 head is the ITR head before it gets all the type r goodies, therefore it flows better than the b18c head. Also, the b16's gear ratio's are the same as the ITR's (essentially), but the ITR came with a factory LSD. :P

I like both.

OP: It sounds like you have a problem with the shift cables or possibly a shift sork. I've never had a Honda tranny open before though so I could just be talking out of my ass on the shift fork thing.

Re: Bring the experts for this question

well b4 u said changing the trans fluid fixed it so check the fluid level. their should b a filler bolt on the trans on the passenger side, u can look in ur manual to get a better idea but u should b able to take that off and stick ur finger n there and if the fluid isnt right up to that hole then ur fluid is lo. if thas tha case i would check ur axle seals where the axles mate up to the tranny and its prob leaking their. other than what every1 else has said u can tear apart ur trans or get it out and take it to some1 to look at.

Re: Bring the experts for this question

I forgot to add something guys a while back it used to be hard to put it into first but the nub on the stick itself we grinded off because it would hit the metal, so we think that nub that we grinded off might have been a bad idea because back then it was borderline going in borderline not going in so we took it off and now that that has happened the neutral spot is so bad, just put it this way 4th gear looks like neutral.

Re: Bring the experts for this question

Also guys I was hoping someone could tell me how to check the shifter cables I'm pretty sure I gotta take my intake pipe off or I was going to take off passenger tire. Either way I don't really know what to do after I do that like how do I check the linkage and see if it's good?

Re: Bring the experts for this question

ok yea tha shifter cables should attach to the back sideish of the trans as in this pic....sorry dont hav a pic with tha trans in tha car but u should get an idea from this. the knobs in this pic are on the top left side. the 2 wierd looking things....hahaha dont kno how else to xplain it.

so once u take th intake piping off u should b able to see to cables that attach to the knobs on the top end of the trans in that pic. the cables will look like this....only attached to the knobs lol.

have some1 inside the car trying to shift thru the gears while u are watching the shifter cables and the knobs for movement and when it doesnt go into gear try to push the knobs in the direction it should go to get into gear....or thas my idea of how to check......not a certified mechanic but thas what i would do.

ha found another pic
