Need help with oil leak!!!! No idea at all...

Ok, first off, sorry if this is the wrong area... anyways, I have a '94 si (H23a1) and it is leaking oil pretty bad. I finally found where, or atleast one place it is coming from (although I think it's coming from somewhere else also) and i need to know how to fix it and what the part is called. Now, I have no idea hoe to get pics to work on here so please email me for a pic of the place oil is leaking out of, my email is Diablo242922@gmail.com. I know most of you (or at least some of you) are willing to help but prolly dont want to email me yada yada ydad so here goes an attempt to explain the area.

Remeber this is an H23 block (idk if they are the same or not). It is directly behind the coil. There is a round black cap the is on the end of the area the valve cover goes. (on the passenger side) I belive it has something to do with the cam, but no clue.

Anyways, the piece is loose and oil leaks out of it even when the car is off.

Any help would be helpful. I need this fixed soon.

Re: Need help with oil leak!!!! No idea at all...

that is called the CAM SEAL, don't get an OEM one (practically the worst OEM product on the car) get a aftermarket one. there are many places, well get into that later. i would also recommend replacing the valve cover gasket at the same time, since they tend to get old and leak also. i would recommend OEM on the gasket, but i have had luck with the auto zone FELPRO brand.

You are going to have to remove the valve cover, and remove the cam holder on the pass side where the cam seal is (you may be able to do it without removing the holder) and then the valve cover gasket goes where the old one was, there is a notch around the bottom of the valve cover.

hope that helped.

http://www.roskoracing.com/H_Series_Products.html

Rosko makes very good products, they have the cam seal for 20+shipping, that is around if not cheaper than the prices you will see around. someone correct me if the cam seals are the same on the h23 and h22, thats something i honestly dont know..

Re: Need help with oil leak!!!! No idea at all...

hey what's up , your problem is not that bad to fix , its a cam seal that is leaking ,and it has two other seals in front on the cams, witch should be change all at once ,but that requires the timing belt removal ,so changing the leaking one first is easier ,because you don't need to remove the timing belt ,you have to remove the valve cover ,and the cam bearing cap the has the the bolts on it i believe the bolts are 10mm , once remove clean the cap and remove the seal ,you should see some rubber looking gasket filler around the cam seal and the bearing cap ,upon replacing the seal try buying some honda bonb or good quality rubber sealer, upon putting the seal back put some sealer around the edge of the end of the cap so that when it goes on the head it wil bond around the seal .The other future leaks that often happen is the balance shaft seal in the front engine timing cover ,is known for failure it will gush oil very rapidly and will have bad results ,so if timing belt is due have it also replace and ad a seal retainer with honda has for this problem ,hope this give you some insides .keep posting if need more help ,okay .

yeah urs was fine kyleb1115 but john114L needs a little more structure to his post just sayin btw h23a1ftw it really is a simple fix and don't cost to much. but if you don't feel comfortable doing it. suck it up and take it to a reputable shop.

maybe when you start helping our community, you'll be able to cynically criticize other people who are simply trying to help people in need, especially someone like johnL whose been a tremendous help to alottt of people on here.

Re: Need help with oil leak!!!! No idea at all...

I am so sorry ,the constructed information that was given by me was too advance for basic under standing of the trouble h23aftw was having, most people who under stand the problems with these cars will be often do some routine maintenance witch in time will pay off ,the issues of oil is critical , but i guess if you don't understand basic engine trouble shooting ,you shouldn't be around one ,the guys who know me here are very instructive with information ,like twokexlv6coupe said criticizing will have no effect on helping others will problems ,so hope to clear that up .IMO.lol

Re: Need help with oil leak!!!! No idea at all...

Thank you all for the help. Im going to to tell me dad, or let him read it cause hes the "mecanic" (I say it that way cause he isnt a certified one and rightn now for some reason cant tell brake fluid from oil...) anyways, it seems like an easy fix which is what i was hoping for. Any one able to tell me if the part is the same for h22 and h23? just so I know.. Also, I know have a leaking clutch... =( its not the hose the goes from fluid to pedal area, its somewhere else... Any ideas?

Re: Need help with oil leak!!!! No idea at all...

Lol posts get hard to read when they aren't broken into sections after a while because the text all kinda blurs together and then you just stop caring hahaha. But yeah, find a nice DIY with pictures, those always help me, if not, do a search on the topic, find someone that had the same problem, and then PM them if you need a more detailed explanation of the process

But that's just how I would do things..

Re: Need help with oil leak!!!! No idea at all...

my mistake for the poor choice of words i was not criticizing the instructions you gave john. I am sorry if it came off that way. I meant to say it was all clustered together like...a book rather than an instructional write up is all. I am very intimate with the H23 engine and the reason i do not post alot of things is because by the time i get to it 2 or 3 people have already posted how to fix or what the problem is.

so please do not think i was insulting you i was simply looking at it from a newbies point of view while reading it and it just seemed like clustered reading. The last thing i want to do is insult someone......outside of the post a flow thread =P

hey man, im having kinda a similar problem.. i got a nast oil leak but i cant find it to save my life. i know its an oil leak cuz i i can see oil dripping on to my exhaust right behind the motor. from the drip i think it is comming from the back of the motor towards the injection. i was thinking valve cover but no leak from that so any help would be great

Re: Need help with oil leak!!!! No idea at all...

i had an issue like this as well. mine was the oil cooler seal. ok you know the thing that the oil filter screws into? ok well take that off and theres a o-ring seal with about a 3" diameter. first i thought it was the oil sending unit, which is directly under the oil filter. but it was not. either way, if its the sending unit or the oil cooler seal, they are both easy fixes. and cheap. mine was wicked nasty, just pouring out all over the exhaust and it was smoking hard core. hope that helps.
