4WS confusion!

Hey guys, I've had my '94 lude for about 2 months-ish now.
Just wondering what this means:

What does the yellow '4WS' mean?
I tried turning the steering wheel from left to right, right to left and so on,
but the rear wheels were not moving one bit.
It was in Park with the handbrake down, if that makes a difference.

Sorry if this has been asked before.
Thanks.

EDIT: Not my dash. Just a random pic.
My lude hasn't done that many kms :P

Re: 4WS confusion!

That light means there is a problem with your 4 wheel steering system. I am going from the standpoint that that this light comes on while driving and not only at bulb check.

Re: 4WS confusion!

From what I've read, if there's a problem with your 4ws, which I think there often is with fourth gens, it will lock up straight until you get it fixed. Search around, I'm pretty sure there's plenty of how-to's for fixing it as well as just general info.

Re: 4WS confusion!

I have a 92 4ws system and mine was not working either. I fixed it by checking the codes and then soldering the cracked points within the 4ws computer.

Re: 4WS confusion!

I thought 4ws only kicked at speeds above "x"mph, so it would make sense that your rear wheels wouldn't turn :p

Re: 4WS confusion!

Oh wow, thanks for the response guys!
Yeah, even while driving the light remains on.

It was working well (very well, actually) the week or so when I bought it.
Didn't really take notice of it until now.

Anyway, currently hoping it's not a big issue.
And it shouldn't be, not like I've driven my car to pieces :P

Thanks again guys, I'm going to give my lude the full check on Saturday.

Oh, one more question:
Is it dangerous if I'm driving it while the 4ws isn't functioning?

Thanks again :)

Re: 4WS confusion!

quick fix that my friend did and idk how and why it worked:
while ur driving down the street, shut off ur car then roll start it. im assuming its manual right?
then park and turn ur wheal all the way left or right and see if the back wheals are turned the opposite way

Re: 4WS confusion!

To check the codes you jump the same wires you would to check out a check engine light. Hopefully its just a code 62 and you could get away with a relay re-solder in the 4ws ecu. Good luck.

Re: 4WS confusion!

My suggestion since I have a 4ws system myself is to listen to these guys and check the codes. Just do it the right way this time and it will work for a good while rather than for a moment. Yeah it is a complicated system but hey its worth it and there are many guys and girls(?) on this site who would trade you there regular prelude for you non-functioning 4ws system in a sec.

hahaha thanks for correcting me. I had an all wheel steering 3000gt before my lude and the AWS kicked in at 35mph.

Re: 4WS confusion!

Update: Took the steering wheel off, put it back on and reset the battery.

It not only got rid of that ugly and often mood-killing 4ws warning light,
BUT ALL FOURS WERE MOVING!

Hell yeah.

Also, how do I delete my own threads? Lol.

Weird that that fixed it.

Why would you want to delete your thread? This is good for someone searching.

Was weird. Maybe I hit a curb too hard or something before? I don't know.
Glad it worked haha.
