Beginning to question..

Im starting to question the reliabilty of the H23 motor..
I know quite a few people that have blown a rod or some that have cracked the block. I, myself, just threw a rod out.
Im getting another H23 motor as that is all i can afford right now,
But on the other hand, i have seen some H23's go for 300k miles..
What are some of your guys' input on the reliability of the H23 motor?
Thanks

Re: Beginning to question..

i say H23's

you just REALLY hafta keep up on their maintenance, just like any other car. the engines are between 14-18years old. thats old. stuff is gonna start deteriorating, like seals, gaskets, hoses, lines, belts, etc.

you can build a $50K engine, but after 15 years, stuff is gonna start breaking down, there's no getting around that.

Re: Beginning to question..

Well, im kinda in the process of debating it right now.. I might just hang on to it, because i love my lude.. It threw a rod last month, but that was the previous owner and my fault..
He beat the piss out of it without changing the oil and when i got it i didnt have the time to do the oil change, so it was my fault, i can't really complain!

you just gotta know how to buy a used car. my old man came with me and we checked every square inch of the car, brought it to honda to have them check it over, and the fact that we bought it from a 50 year old mom/neighbor of ours who had receipts of EVERYTHING, we knew it wasn't beat on/abused.

Re: Beginning to question..

Word. My car had 3 owners before me, but everyone took ridiculously good care of it. The first owner bought it brand new in 96 and had all the factory service records up until about 2002. The second owner was a kid I went to highschool with who now runs his own garage, and he performed maintenance on this car religiously. The third owner was his little brother who basically followed the same path, and now there is me. I plan on being the final owner. *fingers crossed*

Re: Beginning to question..

Yeah i bought my first lude off of a 60 year old man. It was hilarious because when i got there, i looked at the car, and it was modded like a teenager had it but this old man was the only owner HAHA but unfortunately, i totalled it :/

Re: Beginning to question..

Neglecting your oil can really **** up your motor....considering it is the essential life blood of a car. The owner of the bar I used to work at had an 08 Mercedes something-or-other, bought it brand new a little after I started working there. He managed to blow it up by putting 70k miles on it in one year and never doing a lick of maintenance to it. Don't be this guy. lol

Re: Beginning to question..

dude if youre gonna quit on the lude, then do it. i say whatever happens to the motor aint really the MOTORS FAULT. LOL. when you maintain it, thats when you notice the 300k performance. dont do oil changes every x amount of miles, do them when your oil look a LITTLE dirty. clean out the filter, egr stuff, pcv valves, and i swear to you on my own prelude, your car will last a long time.
if you get a civic, then youre gonna inherit alot more problems than the lude, you'll see. muahahahaha!!!
besides, civics are pathetic, thats why they SWAP motors.

is there something wrong with swaps? ive seen some really cool civic builds on the track; everytime i go out there there's something new. there's more civics and tegs out here then anything else.. yeah their overrated to the max but there's some legitiment to them.

Re: Beginning to question..

I think the main thing that every ne tends to over look is the fact that our cars are pretty old.. now having said that unless we are all like rc114 who buys cars brand new just to look at them and then start driving t 10 years later......we have no idea what shape our motor is in.. But we all drive like Mario Andrette... why cause we have a prelude and we know its supposed to be tha flagship of honda so we tend to drive it hard.....
