left stranded at the store need help

So basically the car wont start. I'm failrly sure the starter isn't getting signal. And the battery is OK as its pretty new and everything in the car works. The main relay is also OEM Honda new about one year old. Its behaving as if the clutch isn't pressed down or as if the alarm is interfering with it from starting.

Well the alarm was supposedly disabled by the previous owners I don't have.any remotes for it. I tried putting it in valet mode. But again its not hooked up right and looks 15 years old. So I got under the dash and ripped as much of the alarm out as I could see. And noticed that it wasn't indeed hooked up.

I also inspected the clutch switch the beat I could and it looks fine.

I also checked the starter fuse and it's good.

I'm waiting fo AAA. To get it towed home.

Any suggestions on what I should start looking at when I get home?

Re: left stranded at the store need help

Check your cables for corrosion or deterioration. That could cause to much resistance in the cable for power to get to your starter. Also check the connections for corrosion as well. If you do find anything, replace with new ones.

Re: left stranded at the store need help

No the motor isn't responding at.all. the dash lights up. Radio turns on. Turn the key and nothing no clicking no cranking nothing. I am almost positive it has something to do with the ignition because all the accessories work without a key even after the door is opened. Sunroof power windows radio all works with the key in my pocket. All cables seem in decent.shape and connections are fine.

Ohh wow, that's interesting. Ignition switch maybe? Or maybe the actual ignition cylinder itself.....

Re: left stranded at the store need help

I'm thinking its got to be the ignition itself... or some how the old alarm is interfering with it some how.

its wierd beacuse this car ahs been trouble laden ever since i picked it up, but if its one thing it does, is always fires right up no matter how long its been left sitting.

I take it around the block every other week a few times just to keep the juices flowing sinc ei dont have the $$ to really get it running right right now...

The s2000 is at my girlfriend's place, and the accord was up in the air with me doing some work on it and I didn't want to lower it back down just to go to autozone, so i said screw its just across the street, the prelude can make that just fine.

Get outta the store, and car wont start...

turn the all key and all kindsa **** lights up like it usually does... starter doesn't make a peep.

I've had bad starters before, had bad relays before, bad relay **** cranks but doesn't do anything starter will tick away but nothing battery has its tells as well but since everything electrical works fine, and the guys at autozone checked the battery for me, nothing was wrong with it... so i'm pretty sure I can eliminate all that.

anyone know how to check the actual ignition?

i'm at a loss... can't figure it out.

bad starters in my past usually required just a few knocks with a hammer or wrench to get it going again when it FIRST starts showing symptoms (after a while that doesn't work either)

Today i definitely tried banging the starter a few times to makes sure that wasn't it.

Doesn't seem to be the problem... usually the starter would at least tick away.

Its got to be the alarm interfering some how, OR the ignition switch itself.

Anyway car is back home now and dont have to deal with it ATM, I gotta get an oil change and transmission fluid change done on the accord as well as raise it and put the OEM wheels back on for my road trip to NY which is next weekend.

Prelude diagnosis will have to wait for 2 weeks till I get back from NY.

IF you guys have any suggestions though on what else to cheick. I think my first order of business will be to strip down the bottom of that dash to get any trace of that damn alarm out of the car... and then, learn how to and test the ignition switch myself.

If the ignition switch does have to be replaced, anyone know what one usually costs? and does it mean I'll ahve to have a new key (different key) from the doors?

Re: left stranded at the store need help

Hey starbai okay ,this is a way to start it you need a piece of wire and the your going to jump the stater from the battery , disconnect the small wire that is connected to the stater ,and then put the jumper wire on the starter secure the other to the battery positive side ,this should start the engine , make sure the car is in neutral withe the key's on all the way . Let me know .

yes the switch going to come with new keys because the mechanism that activates it is all in one harness along with plugs.

Re: left stranded at the store need help

if i was at my wits end i'd take the starter completely out and test it on a battery. my porsche starter didnt make a damn sound, so i took it out, and it ended up that it was just bad. doesnt hurt to try

Re: left stranded at the store need help

Really sounds like a starter problem or something inline with it. If your accessory circuits power up its not likely that the cylinder is the problem. LilMissys listed good starting points. If all that looks okay yank the starter and bring it to a parts store to test.
