VSS Help

Hello,

New member here with a recently purchased 93 prelude. The speedometer wasnt working so i figured it was the VSS. I went to remove the sensor and noticed the bottom gear section was lose. Upon further investigation it looks like the mounting bracket snapped. It looked like it was the only thing holding down the bottom of the sensor so i went to the local junkyard looking for a suitable replacement. Didnt have a 92-96 prelude but did have several other similar generation hondas. All of the cars i found with similar sensors and single bolt setups seemed to not come off when this rear bolt was removed. Are they not supposed to come out and not really held in place with this one bolt? Or was this generation removable where other honda's were not? Thanks!

Re: VSS Help

VSS's are a bit fickle/PITA to remove, especially if it's the original one. you are correct, it's only that single 10mm bolt that's holding them in, and it's pretty common for that tab on them to snap off too.

once that bolt is removed, try wiggling it back and forth and side-side to loosen it up, then once it's loose you should be able to pull it straight up pretty easily. just use some muscle.

Re: VSS Help

better safe than sorry is always good

yea the hardest part is loosening up the gear thats on the bottom of the VSS.

also are you 100% positive its the VSS that's busted before you stress yourself out? i mean 95% of the time when your speedo is busted its prolly due to the VSS, but it should also be throwing a CEL, #7 i believe, if the VSS is busted. just something to make sure of

Re: VSS Help

It's the gear im pretty sure. THe gear is loose and seems to have some teeth chewed up on it. The piece of metal that the 10mm bolt holds down snapped and the part that captures the gear is...missing. lol. Also when jacked up in the air and i spin the wheel it only moves the gear if i angle it.
