random flickering dash

Alright so my 93 sr-v whenever I turn on the head lights about 80% of the time my temp/fuel gauge flicker between the bright mode and the dimmer mode that you have a choice to put it on through the dimmer switch. Lately it has become much worse. MY clock my rpm/speedo and the fuel/temp gauge all do it. It alternates between the 3. So for example if my fuel/temp flickers onto bright it will shut off the lights on the rpm/speedo. Then it will go back to normal between the 3 things then the clock will flicker and the fuel/temp will go dim and my rpm/speedo will get super bright. It usually happens if I am on an uneven road or go over a bump or something like that. But it does occasionally happen when the car isn't even moving But not often. Also this only happens when the headlights turn on. I am leaning towards the dimmer switch going bad, but that is the only idea I have come up with. Any other ideas?

also off topic. My car randomly started redlining at 8,000 rpm before I could never get it to go over 6500. All I did recently was get an oil change why the sudden change. What is normal redline for the h22a 6500 or 8000?

Thanks

I would say you have a short in your circuit. That's just my opinion.

Re: random flickering dash

I may have to agree with you on that. I forgot to mention when i bumped this when I got home which was about ten mins ago it was doing its flickering crap. So i randomly kick my foot up into the wiring near the fuse panel and it stopped and the lights that were off turned on. I did it again and it started to flicker as I was moving my foot int he wires. So I am assuming there is a problem in that general area. that or i was hitting the wires that lead to the dimmer switch and that is the problem :( i hate when this **** is hard to figure out lol

Re: random flickering dash

When my dash flickered it was because the alternator was on its last leg.
H22A Is supposed to redline anywhere between 7200-7800
Is your VTEC engaging? If it is you should notice it by sounds and feel. Once you hit 5500 RPMS your cars sound should go from baaaah to BWAAAAAAAAAH! once you hit 5500 your head should go back a little bit from the sudden burst of speed.

If your car is redlining at 6500 then more than likely your VTEC is not engaging which could be pressure switch, bad solenoid etc.. Is your H22 a swap or is it native to the car?

Re: random flickering dash

well it is defiantly working now because my car does exactly as you described. It didn't really do that before. and like I said all I did was get an oil change. Now the h22 that is in there is the second engine. But it did originally come with an h22 the guy i bought it off of said the first motor went buh bye and swapped in a new one. Now from what I have been reading vtec runs on oil. My buddy who did the oil change said before he changed it he put some tranny fluid in and let my car run for about half an hour then drained the oil and put new oil in(and of course filter). and ever since that is when I have this amazingness of real VTEC lol. He explained to me that the tranny fuild kinda cleans the engine out. So is it possible the vtec solenoid was dirty as **** and by him doing what he did clean it out and now it works? lol Because honestly from how the car performed when I first bought it to how it performs now is a huge difference and i like it. lol

Re: random flickering dash

I've never heard of anyone putting tranny fluid in their engine to clean it out!? Maybe someone else can chime in here.

So long as your vtec is working now, I wouldn't worry about it anymore. If it starts redlining at 6500 again then post up a thread (search first)
Now take out that alternator and go to auto zone to get it checked.

Re: random flickering dash

i have the same prob with my fuel and temp gauges flickering, but it only happens when my headlights are on. i read on another thread that it may be the dimmer control unit having bad connections (located behind the black plastic on the right hand side). i haven't checked it out yet, but this may be another potential area to check.

Blue Harness, drivers foot well, mid way up on fuse panel. -- It is loose.

Ot the harness plugging into the back of the dimmer rotary switch is going bad... doubt it tho.
