clunk sounds while turning

i recently replaced my driverside cv halfshaft and after i did that it started making a kinda scary sound when turning. it is dependant on my speed because if i speed up i hear the noise also speeds up. i only hear it usually under 35-40 mph, probably because i dont turn sharp at all above those speeds. residential driving brings about the sound a ton though, i actually did circles in my road the other day to listen to it and it happens when im turning both ways, kinda sounds like driver side though which makes me think we didnt replace the halfshaft correctly, but i swear its in there great... any help is great, thanks.

Re: clunk sounds while turning

My friend Nate (Camshafted on here) had that same problem. PM him and ask how he fixed it. In the meantime I'll look and see if I can find his thread about it.

Re: clunk sounds while turning

If I remember correctly... the problem on Nate's car was that the bolts on the bearing support (the bracket that the halfshaft passes through) weren't torqued all the way and that was causing the vibrations. You might want to check it out.

Basically what our ROTM finalist here said but a little more specific.

Re: clunk sounds while turning

LoL I had this problem like a day ago. My wheel was pretty much about to fall off because it had not been torqued down tight enough... The first things i would check for are ripped boots like others are saying.

Re: clunk sounds while turning

i dont know where you got your axles from, but i recommend autozone for their lifetime warranty. bad thing about autozone is that 1/4 of the time, you get a bad axle (so it seems) so if you bought it from autozone or somewhere similar, it IS possible it is still the axle. i have had 2 bad axles from autozone. of course when i get a working one they hold up amazing.. and yes they make a clocking sound when turning when they go bad.

correction lol I only had one of the three bolts left in it when I took a look. This caused it to vibrate like crazy (death shake as ethan liked to call it) at any speeds.

I bet its your CV shafts. Make FOR SURE that they are pooped all the way in place. Also take a look at your upper ball joints and tie rods. But I bet it was the camshafts. Or something related to them such as te drive shaft on the left side.

Re: clunk sounds while turning

i checked everything out and everything is tightened. when i take my wheel off i grabbed the brake caliper and opposite side of rotor and shook it, and i heard the same sound i hear when turning, so im convinced i found where its at. i just cant figure out what it is. when i hold the brake caliper tight and shake the other side it doesnt make the noise, but i held the lower control arm (which i thought it was at first) and shook the brake caliper and there was the noise, i checked the bolts on the caliper and they are good and tight.

im pretty sure the cv axle is popped in there all the way because i grab it and shake it and it doesnt make noise and only has a couple millimeters of give either way.

Re: clunk sounds while turning

i went and ordered an endlink repair kit at autozone but i have a feeling he sold me the wrong thing and ill have to take it back when i get it. would anyone feel like posting a link to exactly what i need? it would be very helpful haha.

EDIT: got under the car again and the end links are fine, but i grabbed the hub of the inner cv joint and shook it and it made a scary noise, so im pretty sure the culprit is a bad cv axle... that i just bought from autozone. anyone know how their warranty process works? i dont want to take mine in and wait for a replacement while my car hangs out on jackstands...
