Trunk Torsion Bars

Does anyone know how to muscle these back on? When I baught my car, they were just sitting in the trunk. They are the 2 bars (with a red stripe, and a yellow stripe on them).. that hold up the trunk lid when opened. Its annoying, because my key doesn't work in my trunk thing (if it does its a miracle), and I have to pop it with the pull thing, but since there isn't any upwards pressure, I need 2 people to pop my trunk.

Any suggestions? I can't figure out how to muscle them back on.

Re: Trunk Torsion Bars

i'd like to know how that person got them off in the first place. i tried taking mine off back when i put a spoiler on my car. i wanted to put the stiffer springs on. but i couldn't get them to move except from the center mount. probably the easiest way to get them in would be with the trunk closed. i would think it would be easier to put the ends in first. first the end that goes in the trunk hing first then the one that goes in the bracket. then put it in the center pivot. maybe a picture would help. my camera is broken or i'd take a few for ya.

I couldn't get mine back on. (TBH, I'm not sure how they came off?) I retrofitted some gas struts to the hinges and went from there.

Re: Trunk Torsion Bars

There is LESS pressure on them with the trunk open...

You need a BIG pair of vise grips and a strong arm/wrist....and a trustworthy friend to hold the trunk lid open as far as it will go. They were twisted when they were being tempered and now your task is to re-introduce this difficult motion back into them.

BUT! With that being said, why not do the gas shock conversion? Less noise/Rattles, better/smoother operation, and with a "door popper"/Solenoid you can even open it with an extra alarm channel. (aka: by remote control) --

See page 20-64 (or in the PDF file it is page 997) They make a tool for getting the springs back on.. but what is the cost vs use of needing it one time>
