Icon1 Status on my Prelude

Summer is almost here and it gives me a chance to take a break from school, and work more hours so I can make money to fix my car. It is a 1993 SI, H23 220k miles, basic package. The previous owner had the car for about 6 years and never took car of it. Until it broke down, he finally decided to buy a new car. He made a deal with me saying that if I were to fix it, and run it again, I'd be mine for free.

The car was sitting there for more than 6 months. I checked it out and the battery was brand new but completely dead. I had to fully charge it using heavy duty equipment. Once the battery was charged, I checked the spark plugs, distributor, and wires. It still wouldn't start! I had to call some guy I knew and helped me out. Turns out the problem was the gas pump.

Here are pics taken from my 3.2 mega pixel phone.

Here is the gas pump completely removed.

I didn't take a pic of the new gas pump. Was too eager to start the car.

Once it started I realized I just purchased the vehicle for $160

More updates coming...

Re: Status on my Prelude

Once I got it, I knew the mess I was getting into. The vehicle has some minor dents that can easily be fixed at the body shop before I get it painted. The interior of the vehicle is in pretty good condition only thing is that...

It's missing a shift knob

the passenger door handle piece is cracked

and the steering wheel is really warn out.

It has a nasty feeling grip when I'm driving. I could just buy a steering wheel cover but I prefer to replace it.

For the exterior, the paint is just awful. It was suppose to be originally Milano Red R81 paint but threw out the years the paint started burning off and fading to more of a pinkish color. It's peeling from every corner, there is major rust on the sun roof and near the rear left side wheel. The passenger corner signal lights were broken so I had that replaced.

Here is the peeling from the hood of the car

This is the only huge dent it has on the car. There are some minor bumps but this one is visible from a good distance

I took the pic from this angle so you can see from the light reflection of how big the dent is...

Re: Status on my Prelude

Thanks everyone! I had some money saved up and was really looking into a 6 cylinder car. More like a 300ZX. What I liked about that car was the power and the exotic look. Instead the owner just wanted the Prelude gone so WHY NOT!? The money I saved is just right to invest. I grew into this car so much I can see the beauty of it. This car parked next to a Civic, or Accord, really shows it's unique exterior design. I really love the aggressive shark face design on the front, and the interior? Just amazing how the dashboard wraps all around with it's digital features. I'm glad I have it especially being my first car.

So now that the car runs, I had to check for fluids and such. The oil on the engine was completely dry! I had driven it like that for a little less than a mile long. Went straight to Autozone to get my supplies to do an oil change myself. It was a pain in the ass to take out the oil filter. I used my right hand to reach under the engine to loosen it up but it still wouldn't twist. It took rubber bands, a rag, and dish washing gloves to get really tight grip to loosen that thing up. At that time I didn't take pics. Sorry!

Re: Status on my Prelude

So now for the first official order of business on the exterior is the sunroof. This should be my most expensive part I think for the exterior before painting it. My plans for this vehicle is to restore all of it's broken parts and have that new look. Not really looking for aftermarket parts at the moment. Just OEM.

I took it to the body shop an the guy told me the sunroof is beyond repair

I placed an order from Honda and got some goods I needed.

This is how I left the sunroof while I waited for my parts to arrive

The panel was just sitting on the arms with no bolts, screws, or spacers for a week.

A really large package arrived by UPS when I got home from school

I ordered the sunroof panel, molding of the rear window, and a small screw holder cap.

Once I unpacked the items I began working on the car.

Here is a pic of me holding a brand new passenger side corner light and showing you the old, cracked holding screw I was using temporary. Even if it's little and know one will know other than me, I'm going to replace the broken parts either way
Before

After

What a difference huh? haha!

After putting the new holding screw, I started working on the molding.

This is the old one.

See how old, rusted, and the rubber material is warn out. I believe this is common for many old Honda's. A lot of my friends and co workers have this piece messed up.

The new trim

Doesn't it look nice and clean? If only the rest of the car looked like that. One step at a time.

How it looks after. Much cleaner.

Last but not lease the sunroof.

If you can see the edges around the new sunroof that's left over glue from the tape. I taped it so dirt wouldn't get into the car but totally forgot about the sun heating it up. I tried removing it with ice and a blade but it would take me forever! I'll let the painters deal with it...

More updates coming...

Re: Status on my Prelude

One thing I do know is that the car has been driven for many years using 87 Octane, and yet it clearly says PREMIUM UNLEADED FUEL ONLY. So I went to the gas station at the corner and hit the 91 Octane button for the first time in 8 years maybe. I turned the ignition key on and was getting ready to go. As soon as I let go of the brake pedal, I felt a big difference on the car's performance. Much faster acceleration for sure. The car feels more alive!

But I've notice two weeks later the exhaust pipe is leaking water.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal?

Re: Status on my Prelude

I went to three different junk yards and couldn't find a single Prelude. There were mostly Civics, and Accords. While I was there, I did pick up a rear lip, and mudflaps from an Accord (just to see if it would fit on the Prelude)

When I got home, I tried on the mudflaps and were WAY too small. Didn't want to begin modifying the rear lip until I got the right mudflaps. So I placed an order again from Honda. This time I bought a brand new passenger grill that I broke, passenger corner light to replace the broken ones, and the right mudflaps.

While I waited for the order to arrive, I did a search on Craigslist and found a OEM rear spoiler for $40. Had to have it! Made the deal with the seller and picked it up in the next hour.

Week later, my goods arrived!

Here on the left you'll see the mudflap I got from the junkyard. On the right is the Prelude mudflap. Big difference...

Once I got them installed, I began modifying the Accord rear lip. These are the results...

Once the rear bumper was complete, I couldn't make up my mind whether or not to keep the rear lip. I took it off and left it in the trunk until I make up my mind when I do the paint job.

Once that was done, started working on the rear spoiler. Here I drilled the holes on the trunk

It was easier than I thought because Honda has already marked where the holes should be drilled to fit the OEM spoiler

I'm guessing the wing is from a Prelude Type S because of the color?

This rear spoiler is just what I was looking for. I already had a 3rd braking light and didn't want to make a hassle of connecting the LED light from other rear spoiler model.
