'92 Honda Prelude Si Speedometer problem

I have a '92 Honda Prelude and every now and then the speedometer just drops to 0, goes to about 10 over the speed that I am actually going, or just fiddle ****s around anywhere in the middle of those regions, and I can't seem to find a straight answer as to why this might happen. I asked a friend of mine and he said that it is most likely the speed sensor, but can also be from bad wiring or wires going bad or something.

Anyway just wondering if this is a common problem for preludes and what the problem typically is, and maybe a price range for it.

Re: '92 Honda Prelude Si Speedometer problem

It can be the speed sensor, but what it was for me (i had a similar problem, gauge would move crazy on idle or when driving) was a bad electrical problem. the fuse i put between my battery and my OEM under hood fuse box melted! after i fixed that i never had another problem with it! so try looking for some bad connection or short or something.

its of course always possible that its the gauge cluster, like you said the speed sensor, or like i said a wire problem. i cant give you a straight answer, its just one of those things you'll have to figure out!

Alright cool, I'll look in to those. Thank you.

EDIT: I just read that if the problem is with the speed sensor that the check engine light will be on. Do you know if this is always the case, because mine is not.

Re: '92 Honda Prelude Si Speedometer problem

Hello all, first post here.
Did a search for speedo problems and this thread looked the closest so far to what my car is doing....
If I have just replaced the VSS in my 94 Honda Prelude Si, and my speedo is still reading at least 10-15 mph over the actual driving speed, on factory rims and correct tires, what else can be causing the bad readings? I will keep searching but any info will be greatly appreciated.

Edit to add >> It is also experiencing hard shifting on the 4 spd automatic tranny. I have read that this is sometimes related to the VSS giving bad readings to the computer. I really hoped the VSS was the problem but now I don't know what it could be. The speedometer works consistently, just says I'm going faster than I am and will not even drop all the way to zero with the car in park. It idles at between 5 and 10.

???

Re: '92 Honda Prelude Si Speedometer problem

Oh man really? That can't be good news.... As much time as you have wrapped up in that sweet ride, I figured you probably know these cars inside and out.

Thanks for your reply though,at least I know this is a somewhat common problem if yours has the same issues.

Does anyone know of any other things that can go wrong with the system to make the speedometer read higher than the car is going? Can the needle on the gauge just be removed and set back a few notches or something? Perhaps that would get it close enough? My gal needs to drive this car for her driver's license road test and they won't let her do it til we get the speedometer working at least close enough so they won't notice it's off...

Re: '92 Honda Prelude Si Speedometer problem

My buddy has been having the same issues on his GSR, the connector that plugs into the VSS is his problem. The salt and crap from the roads gets into the plugs there and corrodes the harness side. I've never done it but I think you could re-pin the connector, though cleaning it out and putting some dielectric grease in may help solve the issue as well.
