Melting Wires.....

Ok, long story shot, 93 lude, si engine blew, swapped for h22a, Retard self didnt use lock tight on the fly wheel, it vibrated loose and bent something in the tranny. i then replaced the tranny. Over the long period of getting money up ( since i was unemployed for almost 2 years ) i finally got the tranny and finished putting just about everything back together. Well she sat there for just about 2 years i slowly gathered what i needed and replaced it all and finally yesterday she attempted to turned over, but wouldnt start. After one attempt she just died and smoke started to come out the driver side. We look at it and its a ground wire melting away. Its the wire from the block to the frame.

Question for anyone to answer is why, if it is a ground problem, where would all the grounds go so i could trace back to see if i have them all in the right places. If its not a ground problem any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated along with pics. Im a bit of a visual learner. Sigh yes i know i am an idiot.

Re: Melting Wires.....

def sounds like a grounding problem. except ALL the grounds go from the "block to the frame", so your gonna hafta be a bit more specific.

on the drivers side, it should go from the valve cover, to the motor mount, to the chassis mount, correct?

but since you did a tranny swap, there's another ground over there as well that you mighta forgot about. from the negative terminal on the battery, one cable should go to the radiator support, and another cable should go to the starter. make sure they're both bolted down and both in good condition, cuz the cable on the starter will eventually start to corrode, rust, and deteriorate.

Re: Melting Wires.....

Terminal to starter is done im thinking i overlooked the negative to the radiator support, so i need to ground that out. As for the melted wire. Im sure im going to have to replace that now lol. im actually going to run outside and check those 2 and see if she turns on for me. Not wanting to get to dirty today, its my birthday and the cologne im going to be wearing doesnt mix well with oils. lol

Re: Melting Wires.....

ok, i have 1 small wire going to the radiator support, an added ground ( from before,) from negative to frame. and i have a wire that is crimped ( stock ) with a circle end on it, cant remember where that goes since i waited a year to get back working on it. so i took some pics and will upload as soon as i can. But any suggestions on to where that ground may go just off the top of your head

o and yes twoke the melting wire is exactly the one you mentioned from the valve area. its the smaller wire to be exact

yup that one DEF gets bolted to the bracket underneath the starter. the bottom hole is most likely still open since it's not bolted down. that would DEF explain the other ground wire melting since the other cable is much, much thicker.
