Icon5 Exhaust question???

Hopefully I can get the right advise, info here. I've asked friends and relatives but got mix results. So before I get my car painted, I need to replace my exhaust muffler. The current one I have on is really rusted. There is one particular exhaust muffler I am interested in but is that all I need to purchase? Will I need to replace my catalytic converter? How about my header? I DO plan on replacing my CAI and header later in the future...for now this is my main priority. Is it that simple to purchase the exhaust muffler and replace the old rusted one and continue on driving?

Thank you

Re: Exhaust question???

i was trying that myself awhile back, i have this one aftermarket muffler and i sorta wanted a quieter one so i figured i could just unbolt some stuff and itll come right off. but its impossible. ive got 97 year and if you have the same 5th gen as mine, look under from rear passenger wheel and you should be see where the mufflers pipe attaches with the pipe thats got the cat converter. theres 2 bolts that keeps it together. as for mine, the previous owner cut the stock muffler, and welded the new one, and i could tell the welded mark right behind the muffler. so, i think it was a 12mm or 10mm nut and ive tried liquid wrench and all, and still wouldnt come off, it just keeps stripping.

if you were to get a new one, you might have to get it cut and welded, unless you can take off the bolt and simply install the new one. as far as catalytic converter, you can keep the stock one, or buy another high flow cat or test pipe, but it will be louder from stock. and it goes same with header.

hope this helps!

Re: Exhaust question???

on ANY car, the bolts holding the exhaust on are always some of the worst rusted/corroded, making them virtually impossible to get off.

yes, it is as easy as bringing the muffler to an exhaust shop and they'll weld it on for like $20.

Re: Exhaust question???

I recently did a bolt up muffler change and now when my car wobbles over smallest of bumps I can hear my exhaust tapping somewhere. I have looked under there but cant locate the tapping. Anyone had this problem or know a way to keep the exhaust from moving and swinging so much..?

where did you get the exhaust? the tapping would probably be hitting against the bottom of your car, you can weld brackets on there, like the apexi n1.
