Icon5 Lot's of thinking going on...

I'll start by saying this: I appologize for the length at which I wrote this. I should be writing a paper right now, but thinking about my car was more appealing. :D

I bought an automatic 93 prelude 4ws about 6 months ago and I've been loving it ever since. However, I've had some issues that I haven't solved yet:

First, it's four wheel steering system is faulty somehow. I've figured out that it will work for a while when I first start up my car and tends to work until I break 40 mph or around there. I drive in the city more than not, so I hardly go over that when not on the interstate. I suppose that means that when the systems goes to change the rear wheels turning direction at higher speeds, something malfunctions and turns on my 4ws light.

Second, the car has recently started showing problems when I start it up. Sometimes the car will not start, but the engine keeps turning. however, I always get it to start by openning the hood and pressing the throttle body lever in a few times before trying to start it again. For some reason, pumping the gas pedal doesn't do the trick... I feel the next problem and this one are in correlation, so I will state them together. (but I know next to nothing about cars, so I may be wrong..). The related problem is with the acceleration while driving, mainly from a stopped or slow position. When I hit the gas, the car hesitates and stutters. It can last only a split second with just a small stutter, but sometimes it lasts as long as 6 seconds of rolling forward, seemingly in neutral, all while making this sputtering sound from the engine. I concluded that the two problems were in relation by assuming that it is a fault of fuel being pumped into the engine. Again, I am no mechanic, but it seems logically sound in my retarded brain. haha. Please, correct me if I am completely wrong or give me some of your thoughts.

The rest of the problems are things that I'm not certain are neccesary to be asked about... The car is old and has 198k miles on it now, so I attribute small problems to that. Such as a shaky steering wheel and squeeky brakes.

Finally, I would like to put money into this car, but I'm not sure how much I should have ready. I bought the car for 2 grand even, so I feel like I can spare more money to make it lovelier. lol. I've been looking at different websites and checking with people I know for solid information, but now I come to you for oppinions. I'd like to do this to my car:
replace the h23 that is in it with an h22 vtec that has lower mileage.
replace the transmission from automatic to manual.
and change out the exhaust system from stock.

The engines I have been looking at are on ebay: 93-96 HONDA PRELUDE H22A VTEC 2.2 L JAPANESE ENGINE JDM : eBay Motors (item 250620699538 end time May-03-10 10:13:40 PDT)
I've been told that putting a Jspec engine into the American cars causes problems, but I don't know why.
Anyways, if you're still reading this, thanks, and can you give me an estimate of possible prices for all this would be?

Thanks. :)

wow...i actually read everything...but i dont know what to say. the motors on ebay are iffy...i say go through an import dismantler near your area and just find a prelude from there, its easier and you can always return it if somethings wrong

A good place to start will be How To: Diagnosing Your Check Engine Light (OBD I). The CEL codes will give you some indication of whats up, especially with relation to 4ws.

As for the hesitation to start/while driving, you may need to do a good tune up. If nothing shows up on the CEL codes for it, you may want to check spark plugs, distributor cap/rotors condition, check fuel pressure, to name a few things. Too much and too little fuel can cause your problems. Does the car smoke much when floored? Heaps of black soot on your bumper? How's fuel economy?

Just a few things to get you started.

Engine buying is a risky thing, especially when its off Ebay. Atleast they say that they have done compression tests etc, would be good if they could show you this before buying. Dont have any experience putting JDM motors into USDM Ludes (I do JDM to JDM swaps.lol) but it would probably relate to wire loom differences (therefore lots of head ache). All possible though, just takes some time.

Re: Lot's of thinking going on...

Thanks for the comments, guys.

I'll keep looking for engines at different places. The only reason why I gave ebay a look was because it said all the info about compression and leak down tests.
I'll give the CEL codes a try, but to answer some of your questions: the fuel economy is pretty low, around 19 mpg. there is some soot around the exhaust pipe. but it doesn't smoke too much when flooded, it smokes, but not bad.

and about the transmission, how much trouble would it be to switch from auto to manual?

Re: Lot's of thinking going on...

i want to say that your shaky steering wheel could be due to an alignment issue or if your tires are worn that could be a problem,
and the squeaky brakes are possibly from worn out rotors and pads. (most people replace both at the same time or get there rotors resurfaced and buy new pads)
