Need help on whether to make this decision

Hey guys I plan on making my 93 Prelude vtec a show car and put it away in storage. So im debating on whether picking up this 95 Prelude SE for a daily driver. The body is rust free with 100,000 miles. Tan leather interior is in pretty close to mint shape It has the SE wheels, tockico illumina shocks eibach sportline springs. Now what im worried about is that it has the orginal h23 bottom end with an h22a1 vtec head on it. This was done because the timing belt broke. It sounds/shifts very smooth and drives awesome. It has a bad idle surge and idles high at 1200rpm. After the car warmed it seemed to be a tad on the smokey side out the tailpipe.(whitish color) They are saying its because the car has been sitting in storage for 5 years and needs to be "cleaned out" The radiator looks rusted out. SRS and ABS light is on which i dont think major issue...Price is at $4,000 I really want a Prelude as a daily driver and can't find anything somewhat clean around here anymore. What do you guys think? Will i run into engine problems with the h23/h22 setup? I didn't know you can put an h22a head on h23 without changing pistons over and such. I plan on driving it for a few years and then parting it out possibly. Knock some sense into me guys. What do you think. Thanks. Heres a pic of it.

I'm no mechanic, but doesn't white smoke indicate a cracked intake or blown head gasket? Probably wrong, but it seems like someone has told me that before, lol.

Re: Need help on whether to make this decision

most times white smoke indicates shot piston rings.

Re: Need help on whether to make this decision

yea it can mean burning coolant....I dont think it has head damage for the car runs very good.

Re: Need help on whether to make this decision

white smoke = burning coolant
blue smoke = burning oil
black smoke = running rich

unless the pic is very very VERY dark, i don't think thats an SE. that looks like a black car w/ SE rims, and they prolly swapped the tan leather interior too. the SE green looks like the OP's green.

even tho its getting VERY hard to find good condition 4G's, especially with no rust, 4K is wayyy steep. not to mention is has a shiitload of problems with it and it's basically ghetto-rigged together...... 2K maxxxxx. maybe 1.5.

i think it looks pretty clean, if you can fix the problems for cheap i would just buy it. but definitely talk the guy down on the price.

Re: Need help on whether to make this decision

Im just worried about the head swap. Maybe its smoking because the head wasnt done right and that is why it has a high idle surge because air is getting into the coolant system or something. I dunno.

Re: Need help on whether to make this decision

If the engine is warm and it makes white smoke, it has to be coolant getting into a cylinder. What temperature was it outside when you tested it? When its cold I find my engine makes steam for ages before it becomes invisible.

Putting an H22A head onto an H23A block could cause some trouble. Some of the coolant ports/oil ports wont like up and could make coolant leaks into the cylinders more prominent. What ECU is being used to run the car? High idle will very likely be due to not having the appropriate ECU fuel trim for the current setup. Your best bet is a compression test, will tell you what the combustion chamber is like. If the numbers are close then at least the piston rings are good so that's a good start.

Re: Need help on whether to make this decision

^ It was like 68 degrees out. It was warm out enough for it not to be smoking. It was a borderline amount of smoke. Almost like light puffs. Are you saying it should be using an h22a(p13) ecu to run right? I have find out what ecu they have in it. If its having an issue with coolant will i find it mixed up on the oil by checking the dipstick? Thanks for the info.
