Re: how to break axle nuts loose?

put the wheel on the car but take the center cap off the wheel, put the car on the ground, in gear, with the e-brake up.
your also going to need ALOTTTTTTT of leverage on the breaker bar (if your not using air tools)
i use a 6' steel pipe that fits over 1/2" breaker bars. it breaks fuking anythingggg loose.

if the car is still moving forwards/backwards doing this, have someone else in the car pressing the brakes.

Re: how to break axle nuts loose?

ive broken 2 craftsman 1/2in drive breaker bars on 1 axle nut. literally spent half the day trying to get the thing off. finally i went to my dads and borrowed his air compressor then rented an impact gun. had the thing off in about 7.2 seconds.

Can you clarify what size impact gun you used (3/4, 1/2, 3/8?) I myself have always done fine with the 6' metal fence post for extreme leverage (it helps to not be a small person either) regardless of what bolt it is. Ive even got some crank pulley bolts off some D15s with pure leverage. I am curious what size the impact gun was because i have just recently bought a nice compressor setup and have yet to pickup an impact gun for it, and im sure im not the only curious one. Thanks.

Re: how to break axle nuts loose?

1/2 drive gun. theres nothing on a honda that you possibly need a 3/8 for lol

i broke the breakers while using a floor jack handle for leverage. the thing that makes the impact gun work so well is the torquing. you know, how it goes pop pop pop pop pop or whatever. each time its shocking that nut and working it out.

For sure, i understand the physics of why the impact gun works. Its specific use of force is in the name of the tool, after-all. Thanks for the reply.

i recommend doing what twokexlv6coupe does. I use a 3/4" drive socket wrench for it though

Re: how to break axle nuts loose?

nobody ever listens to me...

go buy a tractor trailer socket set. its got a 1 inch ratchet, one inch breaker bar, 2 one inch extensions, and sockets ranging from 1 inch to 3 inches...

got it for 50 bucks

best 50 i ever spent, grab a 6 foot pipe and put it over the one inch breaker bar and have 3 guys jump on it. more torque than any impact driver your going to be able to get your hands on. that should get those rusty nuts loose.

Re: how to break axle nuts loose?

im joking. and they are rusty when they have been on your car for 14 years straight! now they are shiny new because they are replaced! =]

this topic has been OVERLY discussed on this forum and another forum. dont bother with flimsy little breaker bars. get a real 1 inch breaker bar and a one inch socket to fit the nut. get a long bar and your set.. or get a GOOD impact driver, MOST impact drivers you come across will NOT have the power to take off a really stuck nut, it all depends on how stuck they are. but regardless the breaker bar IS the last resort before cutting. you will get many times more torque out of a breaker bar than any impact driver...unless your talking about one in a tractor trailer shop=]

Re: how to break axle nuts loose?

Hit it with PB, let it sit over night, hit it again in the morning, give it 3 hours, then hit it one last time, grab a 3 foot breaker bar, and show that biitch who daddy is. I got a 3 footer with my big nuts, and after beating on it for awhile, my nuts loosen. The extra lube always helps too.

You gotta have some big nuts to use a 3' breaker bar. And this calls for it.

Re: how to break axle nuts loose?

hahaha yeah yeah ok /immaturity

yeah no doubt a 1in breaker bar will do the trick but the way i see it.... 1 in breaker bar is f'in expensive and youll never use it for anything but axle nuts... impact gun can be used for a lot of things so its a better investment... if you already have a compressor that is. idk, whatever suits your budget and your needs best. either one should work
