Newbie question.

I'm getting ready to purchase my 2nd vehicle, and I've recently fallen in love with the 4th gen prelude, I was just wondering is there any sure fire ways to tell whether the vehicle I'm looking at is an Si, specifically a '94 Si?

Re: Newbie question.

If it is a true Si, then the engine will be stamped H23a1. That is, if it is the original engine. If it is a dual overhead cam but not VTEC, then it's an Si. Just look at the valve cover, if it is DOHC, but it doesn't say VTEC, then you've got an Si. Just remember it has to be the stock engine for this method of recognition. More people will chime in with better information.

You can also enter the VIN here:

http://www.honda-prelude.com/knowledgebase/vin

It will tell you everything.

Re: Newbie question.

No problem. Your best bet would be to obtain the VIN and enter it into the site I linked you. It will tell you everything about the car you are looking at. Is it an automatic by any chance? Our preludes are notorious for having bad auto transmissions.

Re: Newbie question.

I'll make sure to do that, and no it's manual.
Any other info I should know before I make this purchase?
I want to make sure I make a good choice since I plan on keeping the car for a while.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Newbie question.

Well our Ludes are mighty tuff, so there really isn't much else to warn you of. Just make sure it's mechanically sound first. Also, consider where you are buying it. If it was a younger guy, odds are he ran the balls off of it. If you do purchase it, make sure to change the oil, filters, and stuff of that sort. You must consider that this car is 16 years old, so no preventative maintenence would hurt. You should always run premium fuel in it as well. If you need any help, feel free to search our forums thoroughly. If you cannot find the answer you are looking for, then you can post an appropriate thread without scrutiny. Please refrain from cursing and arguing. We are all family and no Lude is superior.

Re: Newbie question.

the best way is to look at the vin number, the chassis code for si's is bb2, so in other words the vin will state jhmbb2...so forth. if bb1 then it's a si vtec (or just vtec since you stated the year was 1994) or ba8 if it's a base model...good luck

Re: Newbie question.

u can also look inside the door jam of the drivers side. Itll say what interior u have (si,se,s) and thats a dead give away. Also as stated above the vin contains the chassis codes.
