Re: cv joint/axle replacement help

axel is really straight forward. trying to take it apart to clean out any crap that already got in there just to put a new boot on is a waste of time. axels aren't that expensive so swap the whole thing

Re: cv joint/axle replacement help

Axles are really easy bro. IMO u should grab the shop manual for your car, Haynes or Chiltons. They give pretty good breakdowns on the process. The one tool I would strongly recommend is a pickle fork! ($10-12). It will make your life a lot easier when you go to pop those ball joints, works well for prying out old axles too. Peace!

Re: cv joint/axle replacement help

Okay i know from facts, my axle gave out after 200,000 miles, and the ONLY reason it ripped was because i did a burn out.

Required parts;
-sindle nut
-36mm (?) socket
-axle
-cotter pins for the two ball joints

IF YOU TEAR A BOOT;
balljoint boot of suspect
"C" clip to hold boot
-Packing grease

I cannot emphasize how important it is to fix the ball joint boots it you **** them up!

(Before you begin drain the trans!)
WITH THE CAR ON THE GROUND;
1. Remove the center cap from the wheel (if you have solid wheels or your like me and didn't wanna ruin the finish put a steel or spare wheel on for now, your spare tire will be helpfull or if you have an extra blade like me )
2. get your big honkin' socket and a pry bar with a cheeter bar, drink a beer and give it the old HOO HAA! - it takes guts, make sure the bent tab on the spindle nut it bent up, use a screwdriver in the slot to ensure it is up
3. jack it up and remove the wheel.
4. Remove the cotter pin from the upper ball joint and then the castle nut.
spray with penetrating fluid and then get your hammer, Hit the sides of the spindle top (the cast iron) yes hit it, give it alot of good hits, if this has been removed for being dropped like him 5 good hits will drop it, remember if your castle nut was on for 200k miles it's ganna take a while!
5. remove the lower ball joint cotter pin and castle nut, this is where the pickle fork comes in, it's almost inevitable that you'll rip this boot with a pickle fork so go order the parts from honda to fix it, they know what youre talking about!
6. remove the suspension fork, yeah it's gonna get in your wan, its a 14 for the shock holder and 2 17's for the bottom bolt, YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE SHOCK!
7, lift the sindle up and toward the door (it kinda rests there.)
8. my boots both ripped on the passanger side so i pulled the axle into 3 pars which made it convienient to remove. i HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY going to the store and getting a new trans axl seal! it will stop leaks on your drive and youre already in there!!!
9. after installing your new seal (hopefully) push the TRANSMISSION side into the trans, you'll need to give it an UMPF! i needed to tap mine in so i threaded on the old spindle nut and tapped her in, it has a lock ring so it kinda snaps in!
10. put the spindle into the lower BJ and with the spine lubed with white lithium slide it in. yes white lithium the spline that goes into the spindle, makes easy sliding and helps protect the splines from rust, thats all the drives the car so keep em nice!
11. castle nut the lower bj so it doesnt fall, it will kind of lean to the left or right which is fine. at this point thread on the new spindle nut
12. reattach the suspension fork over the new cv joint
13.pull the UCA down and castle and cotter that one.
14. Make sure everything is tight and cotter pinned, then put your ****ty wheel on, from here grab that HUGE socket again and wail on that bitch until she comes tight as hell.
15, a metal chisel is prefered but i've done it with a screw driver. hit the slotted part with the tip of the chisel so it bends into the slot, your cv is now locked, change your nice wheel back on and youre done!

16. Go smoke the tires.

i found the meguires wheel cleaner works the best on the grease, it comes in a purple bottle.

Yes, i am god and that took forever, youre welcome!

what that does is, you can slide the booth over the cv joint, you dont need to take apart the unit, all thats involved is taking the drive out of the hub

Re: cv joint/axle replacement help

undo the fill bolt (about 6-8" above the drain bolt), stick a hose down from the top of the engine into the hole, pour fluid in. voila
