It is well possible, most cars here are running custom exhaust setups without a cat and aren't throwing a CEL

to be catless you have to re route your o2 sensor

Quote from lude4lifeh22:
There are spacers you can buy, that set the o2 sensor back from the main flow of the exhaust. A buddy of mine uses it, and doesn't get any CEL. I have an 02 simulator from when I had a test pipe, unfortunately Casper stopped making them though.

Re: i want to be catless

If you have a code reader or have a buddy with one you'll be fine. I have no cat and have to clear mine every month or so. It doesn't come on immediately. Honestly I would run a high flow cat or stock. I had to "fix" mine out of necessity, a chunk was broken and perpendicular to the exhaust flow. 14 mpg and NO BALLS was the tip off. I wish it was still in tact. My exhaust stinks horribly, I gained nothing over previous to broken cat and the exhaust sounds a little weird. Unless there is a problem I wouldn't mess with it.

Hmmmm...the higher powers will have to really answer that but I don't think so. If you clear it then it doesn't think anything is wrong. My car seems to run fine.

Seriously, keep the cat on there. The fumes and **** are horrible when they get in the car, and especially for the people behind you while in traffic.
The gains from the high flow cat aren't even worth it IMO if the stock one doesn't need changing.

Re: i want to be catless

I agree with E. When I remote start my car and walk out to get it I walk through my exhaust. Its like hitting a wall. The stock cat just has grid of material that runs the length of the cat. Nothing "blocking" flow like people are lead to believe, such as myself.

Re: i want to be catless

No tangible benefits of running a test pipe instead of a cat. However, if you insist, you can get something called a "CEL Eliminator," I think King Motorsports has them. Basically you put it into a bung on the test pipe, and there's a filter on it that allows very little exhaust to get to it, so that sensor reads a lower emissions signal (or whatever t3h kcuf it is) than the first 02 sensor. Thus, you don't throw a CEL. They're only like $20.

Re: i want to be catless

Going catless is the dumbest idea ever. I was reading a tuner magazine last month (i think import tuner) where they have a fact or fiction section. Basically, they take the wive's tales of sport compact tuning and find out if they're true or not. Last months' question was:

Can you make more power by hollowing out a cat?

What they did was made a baseline run of a B16 or B18 engine with the cat installed. Next, they took the cat off, punched a hole through it and put it back on. The car gained one horsepower and they said it sounded and smelled ****ty. Then finally, they put a test pipe on and it only made 3hp over what the car baselined at.

But my question is why do this? have you ever heard of a car without a cat on it? On a 4 cylinder, it sounds terrible! The sound is so loud and tinny, that nobody would want to be within a mile of you for fear of eardrums bursting. You need to rethink this whole idea.

As a person who's gone through it all on their exhausts (and yes, i went catless for a period of 3 months), it's not worth it. I got a random technologies OEM-fit replacement cat (hi-flow) and not only did it pass emmissions, but it kept the noise down and was still quiet. Now with my custom exhaust, I'm still running a cat (just welded a 3" one into my 2.5" exhaust piping to keep the flow moving) and am having great success.

By the way, if you really want to go catless, I have both a test pipe and a test pipe that looks a little bit like a cat (but is actually a small resonator) I'd sell to you for $10 plus shipping.

Re: i want to be catless

i have no cats on any of my vehicles (cept the neighbors cats...)

with my truck, its probably alot different. being a chevy 4.3L v6 from 1992, i doesnt have all the sensors and stuff that your guys' cars have. the thing made a TON more power when i took the cat off it. im running 2.5" exhaust from the y-pipe back into a glass pack, and its awesome. its nice and loud at WOT, pretty quiet at lower RPM's and when it idles, it sounds awesome! im never putting a cat on my truck haha!

i also have a 88 civic hatchback. the thing has 4 different sizes of piping on it (not my doing, bought the car for 125 bucks). it doesnt have a cat, it has a huge 4" muffler on it. the thing is very obnoxious and loud. i hate it, sounds like a freaking lawnmower on steroids. i dont think i would put a cat back on it, but i would def. put a resonator on it, and a smaller muffler.
